Great topic as I was wondering the same thing with my lg.

She is turning 4 later this year & still prefers her left hand over her right one. DH & I are both right handed & also both our families.

They say you can start seeing from roundabout the age of 4 or 5 which hand they prefer & like Claire A mentioned that Liam's right hand started showing dominance & he is almost 5!!!

My lg writes, draws, colors & paints with her left hand & also wants to cut with the left hand but struggles with it but when you put the scissors in her right hand, she cuts better

She also kicks & throws with her right hand & also eats right handed.

So, we just have to wait & see what happens!

thanks for the responses, very interesting, it seems alot of children have a left hand preference at first.

will watch and see how it turns out, not really bothered either way, just wondered if the preference now would indicate a preference later on. but it seems they switch through the first few years.

thanks :)

Stefan has preferred his left hand since very very early. He is now almost two and still does most things with his left hand. His left leg is defnitly dominant as he always steps with his left foot first when going up stairs or climbing onto things. I almost want to say at this stage his leg preferance is more obvious than his hand preference as he can do most things well with both hands, just normally uses the left hand first.

Both me and DH are right handed but my FIL is left handed and my BIL is a forced right hander, he is so obviously left its not even funny but was forced in school to use his right hand as it was "frowned" upon to be left handed.

I feel its importand to give both sides equal oppertunity to develop and therefore encourages Stefan to use both hands equally at this stage.

Time will tell!

Brandon has also always has strong left handed tendancies - wrote left handed, kicked with his left foot, played golf the "wrong" way round (the flat side of the little golf club faced backwards - if that makes any sense), we even bought him left handed scissors, but now at almost 5 the right hand is coming to the fore.

Liam still switches between the 2.

I stand corrected, but I think they only "decide" which hand is most comfortable around 4 or 5, up til then, they switch.

From around 4months we could see that Em prefered her left hand, and is now a total lefty. My sister and Dh are lefties. I'm sure Kate will be as well :)

Kaylee has also shown left hand preference from when she started picking up things, and she's recently learnt to bang her hand down like a drum stick and only does it with her left hand.

DH & I are both right handed, but my brother & mom are left handed, as are my dad's aunt as my one cousin.

Will be interesting to see.

First angel resting 25/06/2009 stayed with us a short 7 weeks but we still miss you.
