Thanks Kristin!

By the time we saw the surgeon the abscess had drained alot by itself so he didn't want to touch it, but said we must see him again on Friday (very nice man, didn't charge me). The emergency room doc made a mistake in putting derma bond on the cut and putting a tight, sticky dressing over it - it was the removal of the dressing that let the abscess start to drain. Oh well, at least my baba is now well on the mend.

Thanks for your posts. I think it's clear that you just have to try and judge the animal's personality and always be careful and supervise LO's and animals.

An abscess has formed under one of the bites on my son's face and I am taking him to a paed surgeon this afternoon to have it drained. I feel so bad for him, but I guess this is part of being a mother and I've learnt a good lesson.

Clarie our lab cross is amazing with Dylan. He can (I don't let him though) climb on her and she is fine. She is a bit odd around food so we keep Dylan away from her food. She is fine around us when eating.

Our other dog is a big softy and has always been amazing around kids, but he is getting old and tired so I also tend to encourage Dylan away from him. For the dogs sake!

Mom of Dylan and Partner to Joerg. We live in the Beautiful Pringle Bay which is along the Whale coast, Cape.

I also think it depends very much on the personality of the animal (cat or dog).
We had a really placid cat who would play with the boys when they were babies, keeping her claws in, yet my mom's cat needs to be kept away at all times as she will smack out of irratation.

The only time our cat would hit either boy was when they were crying - I think she got distressed and thought she would just give them a bit of a whack to quieten them down

We also have a dog who is amazing with the boys - Liam can sit with Buddy's food bowl between his legs and eat pellets from it, sharing with Buddy (yuck I know), yet if the boys go near his bone he will give a warning growl, and if ignored with give them a bit of a nip.

Thanks for the warning.

I also have a little kitty and he loves to be pulled and tugged by the kids, he always comes back for more but accidents can happen quickly.

My manager bought her little girl a puppy when her daughter was born thinking they would get along as they grew up together, it went well for 9 months and one day, the dog got jealous because he wasnt getting attention and attacked her daughter. She ended up in ICU for a month and a half. She struggled to feed her and she didnt make a noise for the next 6 months as her throat was badly injured.
Children and animals should be supervised at all times as LizeP had said
