Yesterday morning my 7 month old son was playing on the carpet in the lounge while I was busy in the kitchen (lounge and kitchen are all-in-one)when I heard him moaning and thought he'd rolled over. I went to see what was wrong and found my cat attacking him. I think what had happened was that he had grabbed the cat and hurt him, and the cat was reacting in self-defense.
My son was badly hurt and bleeding so I took him to the emergency room where they treated the scratches and bites - luckily no stitches were required, only skin glue. Later on in the afternoon my son was crying in pain and I noticed that his cheek was swollen and hot, so I took him back to hospital where they prescribed anti-biotics and pain killers. He's much better this morning, but he really looks terrible, like he's been in a car accident. I have since given my cat to one of my neighbours who is happy to have him.
I just want to warn other pet owners to be more responsible and careful than I was, these things can happen in seconds (I'm so glad it was a cat and not a dog). It was neither my son's or the cat's fault, my son just wanted to play with the cat and he's still too small to know how much he can hurt. I should have been more careful.
