I agree with you Emsmom- looking after babies and children is hard work.

R28 per day sounds like a very little amount. Just filling a basket with basic groceries usually costs about R200. I would say that you should check that this is in line with the labour act.

My children are my prize possessions and I always ensure I go to great lengths to ensure the person looking after them is happy and that means well paid.

I run a recruitment agency and place au pairs and it makes me angry when people overwork and underpay. It really is not fair. Quite honestly if you can't afford a service then you should not have it.

if so then she is getting paid R28 per day to look after your son.

I pay my maid R600 per month to come in once a week and just clean.

I did look for an Aupair for my daughter and the average cost was R30 per hour, so basically R3000 a month half day. I feel this is a fine amount, and actually felt it was too little and offered medical aid.

This is me personally, I feel looking after a child is very hard work, even if not cleaning the house.

I have a domestic nanny and she looks after my son now 6 months and she cleans when he sleeps. We pay her R3000 per month live out. Includes her traveling costs. I am in JHB.

i pay my nanny R1300 she looks after baby and does baby's washing. There's nothing else she does as i prefer doing things around the house myself. She is a live in and leaves friday after i come home from work.

I have a live out Nanny, I pay her R2550.00 p/month. That includes her taxi fee.
She cleans, and looks after my LB.
I worked through a company CCMED, maybe they can help with an angency in Durban.
My nanny went on a course and she's got first aid.

This becomes an issue of what you can afford to a large degree.

The average going rate seems to be between R1800 - R2800.00 per month.

The experience the person brings is an issue, but more important the personality click - do not put aside "red flags" that go off in your head when interviewing.

I really suggest you approach an agency in your area who deals with nannies and the like. Someone that someone in the area can recommend. Many are fly by night and terrible, so go with caution.

Ensure they have a "replacement" guarantee clause i.e. if the situation does not work out they agree to find a replacement which covers the first three months.

Do not part with money until you have the person in hand - NEVER PAY ANYTHING UPFRONT.


Arrange that your domestic does a first aid course with a focus on babies and toddlers and go with her so you can do the course together.
