Employing a nannie? cost?

Hi everyone

my nanny is live in as in the house and we pay her R1200 a month, this is our arrangement.

she works from 8 to 4:30 pm
weekends she is off
she eats whatever we eat so we include her in our grocery.

I personally think what we pay her is not enough but it is in line with what labour has allocated for where we stay and what We can afford at the present time.

Hi everyone, thanks for the topic. I'm also a first time mom and will be interviewing two nannies this weekend. Please could you share your tips on what I should be looking for and what questions I should be asking - I'll really appreciate your input!

I stay in Jhb, northern suburbs. My nanny works Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 15:30. She looks after my son (13 months) and cleans the house, plus does washing and ironing. But baby comes first and if the housework gets a bit behind, I get one of her friends in to help for a day or two.

I pay my nanny R 2500 pm, plus she lives in at the house next to ours where I pay for her boarding (R 500 pm). She used to live in horrible conditions in Diepsloot and have a lot of taxi expenses so she is benifitting a lot from living in.

Because I pay her boarding, she babysists about once a month at night without extra pay. She then sleeps over in our babies room.

She goes home to Bloemfontein once a month for the weekend and then leaves early on the Friday. She also has paid leave and I often give her a day off if we go away for the weekend and leave on the Thursday.

She is an angel, and we wouldn't cope without her!!

no my daymother only look after baby from 7am -12pm from monday -fridays. Most times 3-4 days a week.

My mom collect from 12pm collect the kids and take them home.
I have a lady that does ironing and cleaning twice a month(fri&sat) for R1000 excl taxi fee.

hubby moans cuz we paying the daymother, my mother and a cleaning lady.I am trying to hire a full time nanny at my house (not live in) that can do cleaning aswell to cut out the middleman and just have one cost.

Always a contentious subject, as people often pay what they can afford and based on the labour supplied - which can differ greatly from one household and region to another, but I think it is good to see what others are paying to get a guide.

I pay R2700.00 and my maid lives in from Monday morning to end of day Friday, and then goes home when I get home from work.

If I go out in the evening during the week, she then "babysits" which means she needs to sleep in the spare room so she can hear the kids if we are out - I usually get kids in to bed and then go out, so it is just a case of listening in the event of a problem - depending on the time I come home I then pay her between R60.00 - R120.00 for those nights.

So I may pay her anywhere from R120.00 - R250.00 extra per month for that.

If she works over the weekend - for instance when we went away on honeymoon, I needed her to stay in so that she could look after Isabelle (who only goes to me or her) then I pay her R350.00 for the weekend.

I do not feel I am paying a lot, but it is good to see a guide of what people are paying. Useful information.

Nice if others put what they pay on as well - assists everyone to understand the range that is being paid.

We also pay R2000 a month. She comes in early - before 07h00 and she leaves when I gets home - between 16h00 - 17h00. I then drop her off at the bus stop where she gets her bus.

She gets paid 3 weeks leave per year and double pay in December. I buy her kids stationery for school and b/day & xmas presents.

If we are home early we also let her go.

She cleans, irons (I do my own washing), watching Kayla in the afternoons after school and she's watching Megan. Megan will go to nursery school next year and she will then help with the baby. I should be able to work full time from home next year. We've also got a another girl coming to the house 3 times a week to spent time with and teach Megan basic colours etc. as Dorcas is not really doing that.

Will see what happens next year with regards to me working from home / nursery schools etc., but we can't be without Dorcas.

Just wanted to add - she doesn't want to live in as she's got kids of her own. She never works on weekends or babysit at night. It's Monday to Friday only. Would have loved to have someone there at night for in case we want to go out.
