Nels_n - to circumsize or not, is a very emotive decision for many people.
I suggest you chat to your paed and he/she can recommend a good person for child circumcision - definitely go to a referral who has experience in this regard.
I also suggest a consultative appointment to get a feel for the person and how you think he/she will deal with your child. Ask questions and also get an idea of the pain level, healing and also fidn out worst case scenario - in other words what are the risks involved.
Generally the reasons to do it appear to be:
1. Religious and custom/tradition.
2. Medical necessity - usually done at a later age.
3. Personal choice for other reasons - often done at birth/3 days old.
4. Cosmetic/Aesthetic - so baby and dad look the same, or becaue either parent thinks a penis without a foreskin just looks better.
5. Cleanliness - there is a feeling that a circumsized penis has less health problems.
All of these can be very opinion based.
Each reason and people's choices do get quite contraversion and this must be the quietest thread I have ever seen on the subject, usually at this point people are foaming at the mouth.
Ensure you do the research and if you choose to do it, go with an experienced doctor.
I wish you and your son well.
