I read a quote/meme today on social media that eluded to the fact that showering is part of self-care for moms – and that this now confirmed that even the most basic needs of a mom is considered a luxury compared to every other human being. Now it may seem funny in the context, but it is quite sad on the other side of it.
I think the reason we as women, and as moms, tend to not take time for ourselves is because we feel almost guilty. We feel that if we are taking time for ourselves and enjoying that time that somehow we are taking away quality time spent with our kids.
The truth is self-care is not optional nor is it SELFISH. It is in fact so much more critical to our mental health and wellbeing than we could ever imagine. We need to have time to ourselves, to do the things that make us happy and make our hearts smile.
Whether this is an hour long soak in the bathtub with bubbles, soft music and a glass of wine, or it is getting your hair done or even just going for a coffee on your own. Whatever self-care looks like to you, just do it!
EMPTY CUP SYNDROME
You cannot pour from an empty cup, and this is true of yourself too. Not participating in self-care once in a while is normal because between working, keeping the house in order and looking after the kids, it is not always possible to do something for yourself daily … but what happens when this starts to become a pattern and becomes something you accept as being a normal state of being? That is when you start to lose your sense of self.
When you start to really take time for YOU, you will start to feel more alive, more confident and definitely more present with your kids (and let us not forget the significant other). Your cup will be filled and you will want to do more, because now you have been taken care of.
IDEAS FOR SELF CARE
Finding ways to practice self-care is really more personal than anything else. You will want to find something that makes you happy. Something that really makes you feel a sense of peace. Once you have decided on this, set a date. Make it a big deal, so put it on your calendar using fun glitter pens – like a mini celebration – and countdown! Get everything you need for your special time and when the day arrives, fully immerse yourself.
You will emerge a new person – and everyone will love you even more.
So, what are you waiting for, start brainstorming your special moment – and ENJOY! - Tammy Nortier
