Why is that upgrades can NEVER be straight forward and that redevelopment is inevitable?? What is it with no backwards compatibility? Drives me insane. Been working on a system called EpiServer (Swedish product) and what a bloody nightmare! Snowball effect of note. Good luck when you get around to that!

Know of PHPBB but haven't worked with any open source systems per se just know quite a bit about them as I recently did an assessment for the Prov Gov who are wanting to implement an open source CMS. Joomla made it to the top three.

I can't fault it except it has no inbuilt ACL management other then the default joomla groups for things such as closed forums unless you migrate to joomla 1.6, get custom ACL mods or mod the core files and database (and modding the core files to add extra groups is not on my priority list.) Obviously moving to 1.6 (1.7 now) is also low on the list as it will involve complete redo of the templates as well as finding replacements for some of the components that aren't compatible with 1.6/1.7 - fun times :P

Other then that it works, simple as that - I do miss PHPBB though - was what I was "brought up" on forum wise.

Yes dependent of course on the general consensus and Deja.

I must say Mat I'm pretty impressed with Joomla's forum functionality. I've worked with quite a few proprietary CMS's and they're pretty much on par.

matwalsh, he he he thanks, Yes, I think that would work better than the karma, but that is just me. Don't how the other ladies feel about the matter.

(just remember we are a bunch of hormonal ladies, we might change our minds again in 6 months time... :P )

Let me check I understand requirements if/when decision made.

1) Simply change the "thank you" button to a "like" button as well as the appropriate text at the bottom of the page - this changes the context of the button without the need for new software to track "likes".

2) Hack the database to give myself a million karma to feel special and then disable the Karma feature completely.

(and for my parts thanks memo)
