Adele Bosman (30) was determined to birth her twin babies naturally. Read her story here.

Even though her boy was breech, she was adamant that she would push through – literally and figuratively! – to give birth the way she chooses.

“The twins were born at 36 weeks. We were as ready as can be but unexpected things do happen. I didn’t really do a lot of research beforehand. My first son, Adriaan, was also born naturally in hospital, so I had some idea of what I was in for.” The birth of her twins differed vastly from her first birth and she didn’t even now she was in labour. “With my first son, I had a mucus plug show, so I knew I was going to have a baby. It was on a Wednesday morning around 10:00. I was very nervous and was in labour for quite long. He arrived the following morning at 10:55. With the twins, I felt some pain, but nothing like with my first son. I was waiting for the same sensations but it never came. I was babysitting my cousins the day I went into labour. Every time I felt a sensation, I’d touch my stomach and just continue with what I was doing.”

Her husband knew

That evening, she couldn’t fall asleep. “I watched a movie and my mother-in-law phoned.My husband came looking for me and he must have noticed that I looked strange. He asked me if I was okay, do I feel any pain. I said it’s just a light pain but he must have known better. He organized that his mother came over to look after Adriaan. He took me to hospital and when they checked me, I was already almost 5cm dilated! I still said to them okay, I will see you tomorrow, I am going home now. They off course said no way. Lol!”

Almost missed it

While her husband dealt with the administration of Adele in hospital, he got a call to quickly go to the delivery room. Adele dilated so quickly and he almost missed the birth of his first twin. “Danika arrived first and seven minutes later Ruben was also born.” Although her doctor supported her decision to birth the twins naturally, the doctor on stand-by the night of the birth was concerned because Ruben was breech. “We did discuss it with my doctor before I went into labour and I was very determined to give birth naturally in any case. I didn’t want my one baby to be born naturally and the second to be a c-section. When Danika was born, the doctor informed me if Ruben didn’t arrive within five minutes, he was doing a c-section to get him out. I gave my husband one look and the with the next contraction, I pushed him out, feet first! My mind was made up. It was so strange. I thought it would be very sore but it wasn’t hard to birth a breech baby at all. I really experienced very little pain. I received no pain medication and could breast feed both my babies. They were so healthy, the doctor said we could go home the same day.” (She chose to stay in hospital for two days).

Grateful and amazed

Before she birthed the twins, she heard scary stories about twins being born. “Long before I found out I was expecting twins, I watched this programme on DSTV about twins, triplets and quadruplets. It was very interesting and informative. I didn’t really read a lot of books, mostly Baba & Kleuter magazine and Your Baby. We were so grateful that everything went so well. The doctor was also quite amazed. I knew God was with me and I also knew that I was able to do it.”
