Breastfeeding Questions

Interesting. Makes sense that the hind milk would fill him up nicely. My boy also gets lazy and falls asleep before he is done but I lift and burp him and try again until he is a rag doll ready to sleep through anything. This morning he is having a nice 2 and half hours sleep so far.
I am completely determined!

Gloeiwurmpie, i struggled with that as well with G for a long time.
very good advise i got that helped a lot was to express a bit before a feed at night, so that the bit that baba drinks is just the hind milk.

before i did that G would only sleep for about 40 min as he just fell asleep before his tummy was full. when i did express he would still fall asleep wile nursing, but then he would at least sleep for 2 hours

i also didn't managed feeding while lying down till G was about 9 months.

The lying side to side also took me a while to master hahaha. The easiest one for me was the normal cradle hold and I sat up & night and stroke his cheek when he dozed off. That helped me.

I must also agree with Gloei on the nipple shields. It can cause a decrease in milk supply cause not all the milk gets transferred to baby. Only do it under supervision of the lactation consultant.

Just push through as you are already determined to make this work and that alone is a winning attitude!

The night feeds are still a bit tricky for us too as LO seems to doze off after only 5 minutes of drinking and then wakes very soon again hungry...I normally try to do a nappy change after the first boob (hoping baby will wake up a bit but it doesn't always work). These first weeks are tough and babies are fussy at this stage and feeding is really hard work!

They lying flat is great once you master it, but I struggled to master it with my first child. I am doing it much easier now second time round although at night I find that she falls asleep even faster during the feed with this position...do what feels right to you.

I would caution against nipple shields and to use only under supervision of a lactation consultant, numerous breastfeeding books also warn against nipple shields because if not used correctly can easily derail breastfeeding and can do much more harm than good. Sorry, I know it is frustrating to get conflicting advise.

Thank you for the advice. I position him well but I think mmaybe the middle of the night feeds we both get lazy. Been trying the lay flat next to each position for sleeping, which I don't think is all that accurate with getting a good latch.

Forgot to add. Make sure you get an (IBLCE) International Board of Lactation Consultant and avoid jungle juice completely!

If baby has oral thrush, he will a white spots on the inside of the cheeks, around the inside of his lip and even tongue.

Also avoid cleaning his mouth with glycerine as it can promote thrush. Daktarin oral gel is wonderful for baby and needs to be treated for at least 2 weeks.

I agree with getting a few laser treatments on nipples and Nuby apparently has a wonderful nipple cream that doesn't need to be washed off before a feed.

Getting a Lactation Consultant in is a wonderful idea. They also need to check for lip or tongue tie as you are not supposed to experience pain through an entire feed. Have you tried different feeding positions?

Always bring baby to the breast, not breast to baby. Nose pointing towards nipple so that baby can open wide.
