Hi Ilana
From what I saw with a lady next to me at the Bay hospital, if you are having a natural delivery they let you hold baba for a bit and then take them away to get weighed and washed etc. And once you are back in the maternity ward then they bring your baby to you to be fed (whether you want to breastfeed or bottle feed).
If you are having a cesection, once they take baba out they show him to you and then get taken away to get weighed and you get stitched up. Once you are back in the maternity ward, they bring baba to you for their first feed. Your first night baba sleeps in the nursery so you can recover from the birth. But then after that baby is by you and they only assist when you ask. They do this to see how you cope etc..
Some advice, if you don't know how to do something ask. Don't feel stupid. And make sure they show you how to bath your baby before you leave.
If you plan on breastfeeding, I would advise to try it on your own. There is a Sister Hutton there. If you are really battling then ask her to help but if you can avoid it do. She can be quite harsh.
I hope you have a wonderful experience there
