Caesar gone bad

I feel better now but a little paranoid. The slightest of pains on my wound scares me, I start worrying that its starting all over again though I know there should be some discomfort as I have not healed properly. I have also booked myself of work til 2011 to make sure I do not strain myself and just relax.

I also did not expect these complications. Yes, no operation is 100% safe, no matter how small. But I advice others to remember this is not the norm, more the exception. It must not scare you or put you off ceasar, just know the inexpected may happen.

Deja, things just went wrong. As they tried to fix one something else went wrong. As for the abcess, all they could say was they do everything to make sure they are sterile, the equipment is strerile and the skin is sterile but sometimes things just go wrong. I learned as the days went by that it was a streptococcal (bacterial) infection.

Des Des- thank you for sharing your story. Like everyone else I think it's good that we are reminded occasionally that a C-sec is not a simple pain free method for birth but major abdominal surgery that can carry complications.

I am pleased that your problems seem to be finally fixed but saddened that it took so long and you were in so much discomfort. I think if by the time you go back for a 6w check up you are still in such discomfort your Dr should be investigatoing why already. Everyones pain thresholld is different but to be in pain for so long is clearly not right and it was a bit bad of the Gynae and the surgeon to palm you off with more meds without checking why.

Now I feel even further justified in wanting my own Dr to do my C-sec because he knows me and knows when I'm sincere and when I'm just moaning and if I honestly was in serious pain I know he would act on it. Trust is a huge thing when it comes to C-sec and the fact that I can trust my gynae to have his full attention on me during and post op is I feel very important.

I recently found my self in a discussion about wether it was really that important for my own Dr to be available for the up coming birth of my twins and I did start to question whether it REALLY was THAT important but today you helped me win the battle with my concious.

As for you wanting another child, obviously after so many re openings and operations I think a controlled VBAC is out of the question but give yourself time to heal physically as well as mentally before you consider having more children. Find a Dr you are very comfortable with before you even begin TTC, check them out and even find as many recomendations for the Dr and hospital as possible. The care you receive post op is as important if not more so than the actual op itself.

I'm really glad you posted this thoug because you so often hear about complications following NVD that its easy to forget that a csection is SURGERY! I was so mad when Living and Loving had an article a few months back which stated that a section was 100% safe - HUH? EVEN getting a mole cut out at the docs rooms carries risks?

Interestingly a couple of years ago the hospital I work at actually had to close theatre (and the hospital to surgical cases) for a few days because about 30% of cases were picking up really bad MRSA in the surgical sites. The traced it back to one of the theatres, but unfortunately it did also affect a few ceaser mommies - one lady actually landed up having a stroke because of the high fever and spent the next 3 months in ICU and Rehab. This particular mommy still has short term memory issues and how gut renching to miss those first months of your babies life...

A month ago I treated a baby for pneumonia that had a huge cut on its head. Turns out the incompetant doc had cut the baby while doing the section (at another hospital)...

Oh my goodness sweetheart, you poor poor thing!

I have no experience of c-section myself but have spoken to moms that have had similar experiences - including a very close friend of mine in the UK. After a botched induction she ended with an emergency caesar and there was some retained swab from the operation, she developed septicaemia and very nearly died.. it took weeks in intensive care and more surgery to recover, meanwhile she missed out on time with her son.

I really hope that your gynae has solved the problem and that you have no more pain.
