I will skip some of these test, because I know what blood group I am, O+, so that means I am Rh+
I know that I am immune to rubella

But I will see what the midwife suggests

Blood tests

Complete blood count

This test screens for anemia, which is very common during pregnancy. Anemia may be due to low iron levels, or can be an inherited form, such as thalassemia.

Blood type

This test will determine your blood type

as well as show if you are Rhesus positive (Rh+) or negative (Rh-). If you are Rh- you will usually receive a medication called rhogam after medical procedures such as amniocentesis, or if you have vaginal bleeding. You will usually get an extra dose at around 28 weeks.

Antibody screen

This test determines whether you have antibodies that could cross the placenta and cause the baby to become anemic.

Hepatitis B

This test will identify women who are actively infectious with hepatitis B, a viral liver disease that can be transmitted to the baby during pregnancy and labor.

HIV

This test will identify women who have been infected with the HIV retrovirus.

Rubella

This blood test determines whether you are immune to rubella. If you are not, you will usually get vaccinated right after delivery. You cannot have the vaccine during pregnancy.

Syphilis

Syphilis does not always cause symptoms but can cause serious problems for the fetus.

Thank you for your replies, i feel better, although I have a headache from crying, and my eyes feel puffy.

Candi ussuall at you first scan 8 weeks, thy do alot of bloods
Blood Group
HIV status
Rubella (German measles) immunity
rh - (has do do with you blood group)
There are some other, but can not remember

At the 12 week check up they do test for downs

I had bloods again at 20 weeks for Thyriod (Because I was overweight) and at 34 weeks I have blood glucose test, again because I was overweight. (My midwife said that my docter was just being stupid about these things, and it was not necsary, I had no signs of sugar in my urine or any diabetes signs.

I will see if I can get a complete list & explanations for you

Hi Candi,

I'm having the foetal anomaly scan done at the Kingsbury foetal assessment clinic....tests for risk of downe syndrome and other possible problems... They need to see one as close to 13 weeks as possible and they need the blood works to be done at 10 weeks. They then look at the blood results plus the scan and are able to tell you the likelyhood of downe syndrome etc. Obviously not 100% accurate but still some peace of mind.

Your gynae may well do the scan himself....quite a few do.
And some people opt not to have the scan at all...

After morning ladies :)

Ok, first, Ankia, Congrats on loosing the weight! It is the best feeling in the world! I know exactly what you are talking about, same situation! I was extremely overweight last year, the worst ever in my life really, after my operation in august I lost all in all about 35kgs... I started karate at the beginning of last year, which was so hard, gosh, at a stage i couldn't even walk to work. [how embarrassing is that!!!] plus I quit smoking [last year was the year!!]

Now i'm loosing more weight cause i just can't eat, and so not liss to eat, and just nauseous...

And yesterday's migraine just didn't help at all either, was foaming cause I couldn't get sick :( which makes it so much worse.

But the weight issue, i'm tempted to go onto the preggie shake, and see if that can't stay down...????

@Pat, ai shame, i'm sorry to hear about your struggle with little one, I hope all comes right soon.

@Skai, I haven't had any blood tests done, blood for what? Ok, besides being super new at all of the "preggie-stuff" what happens at the end of the 1st tri that woman must do, or will happen?

~ otherwise ~

Hope everyone is having a good day & HAPPY FRIDAY :) :)

Hi Pat - the sister at the gynae' offices said to me the other day that this too shall pass like everything in else in life ... lets try to hang in there!

Strongs girl !

Ankia, I know exactly what you are talking about. Im not a thin girl myself and cant really afford to put on too much weight during pregnancy. But since you managed to loose 25 kg before, Im sure you will be able to loose the pregnancy weight as well. Difficult as it is, Skai is right, the key is tryng to make healthy choices - easier said than done though!!
