Interesting topic which I never had to worry about the first time around but its different now!
At my last company, as a rule they would pay 30% of your salary, and you claim the rest from UIF which is also around a 30-35% payout. And it was disclosed on the UIF slips, it worked out fine.
Then they introduced a benefit when one of the ladies was pregnant that if you'd been there longer than 3yrs they'd pay 50% the first two times and then back to 30% after that.
It was also stipulated in the contract that you had to work there for 12 months afterwards in order to benefit from this payment which is not unreasonable, but does complicate things if you are planning on becoming a SAHM once baby is born.
I also understood that remaining credits from your cycle get carried over if not used up for maternity leave, and if you change jobs it starts accumulating on top of that.
I would certainly hope so because I was retrenched, applied for maternity UIF and then normal UIF after that, for a total of 8 months I think. After that I worked for 8 months on a contract, and now I'll probably be doing contract work again till baby arrives. I could certainly do with some maternity UIF during this time!!!
