Hi Ladies,

I saw Dr. Swart at Femina from week 10 of my pregnancy until week 23.
I was very happy with him. He answered all my silly pregnancy questions with a lot of patience and explained everything very well. A few of my friends also used him as their gynie and all were happy.

However if you are interested in using the birthing unit (absolutely stunning)
at Femina hospital you have to use Midwives exclusives as far as I know. This is what I did and was extremely happy with the Midwife from Midwives exlclusives and their help to help me achieve the natural birth that I wanted. They only do natural births so if you want an elective C-section I would recommend one of the other Doctors at Femina (Dr. Swart is a good choice).

Note that the birthing unit is charged separately from the hospital fee and you will have to pay apart from the around R10 000 fee (most medical aids pay the entire fee for this) for the hospital to use the birthing unit AND the extra fee of Midwives exclusives in the region of R8000 of which most medical aids only pay 50 - 70%. All the checkups at the midwives are perhaps only covered to about 30% at most medical aids and the rest you must pay yourself. Using the Midwives was quite an expensive option for us considering that Discovery Health would have paid every cent if we have just used Dr. Swart and birthed in the normal Femina hospital ward.

I don't regret one bit the money we spent to birth at the birthing unit with Midwives exclusives, but this is certainly not a cheap option! I was determined to have a Natural birth (VBAC) and knew that a brilliant support structure was crucial for my success.

I think natural is a very scary thought! But if you really want to do it - I think you should go for it :) Check out Midwives exclusive - they work with Femina Hospital and based on the information on their website, they seem very clued up. The facilities look great as well!

thanks for the response iv seen many good reviews on Dr Swart i think i should go with him.havent seen any review on Dr Chauke.

from what i have read you can work with the midwives and just have a gynae for backup that will help the midwife if you need to go into emergency c-section...im soooo afraid of natural birth(im just a coward) but i must say im considering a water birth i just need reassurance that everything will work out fine.

I'm so glad you asked lebone87 :) We are TTC and I'm hoping that we will have the opportunity to have a natural birth at Femina Hospital. I have also heard only good things about them. I believe they work closely with Midwives Exclusive.

Do you ladies know whether you need to consult with a gynae at Femina Hospital as well as join Midwives Exclusive - or can you just go through Midwives exclusive for all your checkups?
