Hope everyone had a good XMas .We didn`t take Zaid to butterfly world the wind here is so terrible we just stayed home had a braai and swim !!!!! But he had a good time with his cousins AND IS BEING SUCH A BRATT I dislike him at times ........He also got spoilet with gifts .

Vix sounds about right. That is basically what we were told. Our paed just said to use probiotics then to use glycerine supp for a couple of days once a day to empty the colon (he had to also have an enema once off). Then we had to use laxette every day for a month to get the poo back to the right consistency. when they are in pain from hard poo they tend to hold it in more which just makes the situation worse.

He is fine now thankfully. I also think that since we give him cold milk it has helped. Warm milk has a bad effect.

Zee- Don't waste your money on a Paed, try this plan first. All the meds are available OTC and if there is anything i haven't explained well enough just ask.

Julz- the here's how the plan works:

Constipation occurs when the bowel draws too much fluid from the stool. The last 10cm of bowel draws water constantly from whatever is sitting there. Now common sense would say to increase water intake but C drinks about 2l of water a day so it can't be that.

C's problem is that he has been constipated for so long now that the bowel has distended (just like the stomach does from over eating) so now instead of being long and thin it's like a balloon shape. o.k so with each day more and more stool fills the bowel and gets pushed to the outer edges of the balloon shape. Now when you pass the stool what is in the sides of the bowel does not get pushed out and being left behind the bowel draws even more water from it.

Our plan is to firstly get the bowel back to it's original shape so day1,2 and 3 in the morning i must insert a Duphalac suppository to clear the bowel of all these hard little lumps that get left behind, then repeat a week later so days 8,9 and 10.

from day 1 give a starting dose of 5ml 3 times a day of Lacson. if no stool is passed then up the dose to 10ml 3 times a day and so on and so on until the child passes a stool that resembles the constancy of soft serve ice cream. If the stool becomes runny on a certain dose then just take half a step back so with C we got to 15ml and had a disaster with poo everywhere so we went down to 12.5 but still it was too runny so now we're back at 10ml 3 times a day. Lacson cannot be absorbed by the body so there is no linit to the size of dose. What it does is keep the stool lubricated to pass through the bowel.

Now we found the correct dose to achieve a soft serve consistency we must stick with that dose for 6 weeks. That allows the bowel time to re shape but at the same time re trains the brain to pass the stool because what laxatives or laxative effective food do is force the body to pass a stool without control so the person/child no longer needs to actively think about pooing. So we're re training the brain to say 'the bowel is full i need to push' but without forcing the child to pass a dehydrated stool.

Julz, I agree with you! We need to spend more money on ourselves because the kids really do get a lot. I never make New Years resolutions but I need more me time so next year I'm going to join Pilates or Yoga classes. We'll just find the money somewhere!

Simone, yes, my mom is really something, I really didn't want the fridge from her, she's a nurse and her salary is a disgrace but she insisted on getting all her kids something big with her bonus. She bought my brother's plane tickets to Cpt, etc. I still feel very guilty but I'll definitely help her out again.
Congrats on the potty training, I can't really report progress with Z. She's got good days and bad days, somethings se refuses to sit on the potty and then this morning she took off her nappy, made a wee and then later poop on the potty as well. All on her own. So maybe little miss Independent just wants to do everything herself.

Ally, the twins are adorable! Love the conversations. I think Z really misses a maatjie. This morning when we went to Clearwater Mall, she immediately ran to the play area and started chatting up a storm and said "hallo maatjie" to everyone. Shame.

As you know since the twins arrived we haven't been actively potty trainig C in fact he wears a nappy 100% of the time again becuase at my mums he was allowed to run naked the entire day and night and i got tired of telling him to stop playing with his willy so i made nappes compulsory.

Just last week he came to me and asked to go wee wee so i took his nappy off and he did a wee in the potty. Nothing since until last night he came to our toilet and asked to make a poo. Now we have never asked him to poo in the toilet because of his constipation issues but as that is getting sorted he obviously feels now he can try it out. Well we put him on the toilet not expecting much and within seconds out plopped a poop with no squeezing, screaming not even much effort. we were so thrilled we praised him big time and he spent the rest of the evening so proud of himself.

It's a start and more than anything it's a sign that this constipation treatment is working and that is most important to me. we've been on the plan for just under 2 weeks now and C makes poop nice and easy without too much fuss and he hasn't had poo tea once. The POA lasts 6 weeks before i can wean him off the medication and see if he can poo for himself. I was terribly sceptical that it would work but wow, i can't believe it! I LOVE my Paed, he just explains things so well that you can understand what is meant to happen and why. the best bit is he only charges R370 which for a paed at my hospital is cheap. 2 years ago i was paying R600 for C's paed
