Good morning ladies...
GML, congrats on graduating!!!! Your picture is stunning- very flattering top- almost hides the bump.
I put in my maternity leave on our system this morning- for 6 months from 29 November, lets hope it gets approved.
Went for the second antenatal class yesterday (and I realise I never gave you guys an update from the first coz I was so sick last week). The classes are very small, last week we were just two couples and this week just three couples.
The first class last week was an introduction, when you know you're in labour (regular contractions, dilation of the cervix, water breaking, show etc), what are danger signs when you should come to hospital (eg. show of blood, prolapsed cord etc). I didn't know about the prolapsed cord thing, which is basically when the cord slips below the babies head and through your cervix. You shouldn't touch it, just go straight to the labour ward. We also did some breathing exercises etc.
Last night's class focussed on the different options for pain relief (pretty much epidural, spinal, gas, pethidene injections or natural relief like water, birthing ball or deep breathing) and we watched 2 dvd's- one of a c-section and one of a natural birth with an epidural- the guys were all very grossed out. I must say, the epidural looks quite painful!!!! And bloody as well!!!! But then I guess there is no pain free option. The c-section looked like they were butchering the poor woman quite haphazardly to me.
I'm also in two minds about whether or not I want an epidural- on the one hand I'm a big baby when it comes to pain and I probably need it. On the other, the dvd looked scary and I also read a bit about the dangers of epidurals and also saw somewhere that babies born by epidural are less smart later in life and it affects their reading ability etc.
Has anyone packed hospital bags yet? I think I will pack mine this weekend.
