I think they will both learn very quickly. And Megan will definately beable to learn the language quickly. Just persit and you will see a difference eventually. It's going to help them so much more in School.

Joli, its never too late and they learn soo fast!!
Our LG would never speak french if anyone asked her something in french, she would always answer in english, then when she was 4.5 yrs, she just had a click and didn't mind !!
I'm sure your LO understands more than you think. They also say that even though a child can speak the two, they will always use the one that they hear around them.
I have a friend and her sons name is johnathan , and in french they pronounce johnotan. So her LB was with his french granny and she was speaking in french and called him Johnathan, so he replyed in eng no, its johnotan. And he was almost 3. Amazing and really funny!!

2kidmamma - Megan is 2 and Kayla is 7. Maybe I must try. From tonight only Afrikaans. He he Megan might think I'm crazy. And yes, I can always try to speak only Afrikaans to the new baby. I must say Kayla is very keen to learn. I sometimes speak to her in Afrikaans (that's why she can understand a little) but she can't answer me back.

Ho old are your Kids again Joli? If they are still under 5 I am sure it is not too late. I think you must just persit and speak only Afrikaans to them, they will soon pick up on it. Plus you atleast have another chance with the new baby and then if they hear you speaking Afr to your new one they will also learn in the process.

Yes I agree with 2kidmamma. I'm Afrikaans and when I started working I really really struggled with my English. It was BAD and I've been passed for promotions due to my bad English so I've always said my kids will be English! When Kayla was born, I asked my steph sister to speak to her in English during the day (she watched her for me and they are English) and I spoke to Kayla in Afrikaans, but then when she started talking, she spoke mainly English and would mix her words and whenever I spoke to her, she wouldn't understand and I then had to repeat in English, so I gave up and just spoke to her in English. Now my kids can't speak Afrikaans. My husband is English and Megan can only speak and understand English. Kayla can understand a bit of Afrikaans, but can't speak it. It's a pity actually. I wonder whether it's too late to start speaking to them in Afrikaans now??
