Bilingual kids

I am English and my BF is afrikaans. We speak both languages to our first born but only afrikaans to our youngest. Jaydon only used to speak Afrikaans as he is in an afrikaans preschool and will go to an Afrikaans primary school. He used to struggle to speak both languages as he would mix both in one sentance and it wouldnt sound right, but lately he will only speak english and before he tries to say something he doesnt know, he will ask for how to say a certain word in English and then continue with the conversation. I do think we made a mistake by mixing the 2 language at the same time as it was confusing for Jaydon and thats why we have decided to only speak Afrikaans with Kyle

Meags - With us staying in SA, I have made english a priority for K. Also, I found it so hard at the beggining trying to switch between french and english when speaking to DH and K Lol! So I just stuck to English in the end.

I am english and DH is french. We are expecting our first LO.
We have been told I must only speak english to the baby and he should only speak french and then the child will be fluent in both.

I am sure that english will come easier for the baby though as I'll be at home all day and DH will only have a few hours a day with the baby.

DH's family only speaks french and mine only speak english.
Dh's company will pay for schooling but only if they go to the french school (in whatever country we're in) so for me, I think english is the priority at first since they'll be schooled in french

Same with my DH. She will master all 3 , they learn so fast!! and your mom speaking to her in french also helps a lot!!

I speak French and Creole and DH speak English. However due to having no family here and DH not understanding French, I found it easier to communicate to K in English. She does understand a little bit of french coz when we see my cousins occasionally the only speak french to her as well. My mom speaks to her everyday on skype in French.

I am sure she will master all 3 languages as she grows up and for schooling, we are looking at a school that offers french as a subject.

I have told the nanny to speak in Zulu to James. He gets German and English at home.

I watched a BBC documentary where studies have shown children that are able to speak more than one language fluently tend to have higher IQ's and perform better at school, they are now trying to introduce second languages at schools because of it..

Language is sooo important, its frustrates me that my Zulu and Afrikaans are so poor (I actually often get the two languages mixed up and confuse myslef completely)
