Nicely said Claudia:) tantrums are thrown to behaviourally express something that may not be verbally communicated - toddler doesn't have the vocabulary for it etc.

Lol @ Gloei having a heart attack, I get cardiac arythmia everytime I read a post mentioning a "good" hiding! Freaks me out to fathom exactly what a good hiding is...
Most children will hit back if they have been hit, it's social learning. Sadly psychology studies have shown that but its the very same psychologists who shove behaviour modification as parenting skills down their patient's throats.

Hi there all

Now when he hits me I stroke his face and I say touch mommy gently.

Looks like it is working.

Sorry for hogging the thread, just wanted to ask Gloeiwurpie: is there anything specific that the book says about toddlers hitting their parents?? I get slapped on a regular basis, and we havent really decided how to handle it. At the moment we just take her out of that frustrating environment, which helps at that moment, but it hasnt stopped, so it seems like we arent focusing on the problem really. Any input welcome!! :)

memo, me too. This is why this last book (alfie kohn) mentioned hit me so hard. He gave mention of a lot of research of what the effects of punishment/bribery/time-outs has on a person. Most people think that being more strict will result in confident, great self-esteem and balanced individual. Years and years of psychology studies prove to show different.
