Left handed toddler

My sister-in-law is left-handed, and she told me if any if my kids are left-handed, I must learn them to use a right handed scissor(she uses one) because there is almost never a left handed scissor available in schools and the workplace.

LOL, these little buggers . My son did so just before his OT assessment.

Ladies, just thought I'd let you know that my LG switched back to her right hand!!

Hi Rakker, thank you and I'm glad that you are bringing this up.

My husband is really concerned that the issue will be forced at school as he is not convinced that she is left-handed. And as you've said, it isn't really determined yet by age 3.

Thanks also for the advice regarding giving things to her in the middle - never thought about that when in comes to the spoon in a bowl.

I think we also need to do lots of colouring in at home to get those small muscles strong - no matter which hand she uses.

I just have to pop in here. According to the Occupational therapist that my son goes to, the hand dominance is only really determined around 4 years. I was really 99% convinced he was a leftie and right before his 4th birthday he gradually stopped using his left hand. Now he is only using his right hand. So I don't know if getting left handed scissors is advisable at this age, while it is still a guess. What she did say was that everything must be handed to the kid in the middle, for example a bowl of food, with the spoon right in the middle. Then the child decides which hand to use. And there is really no harm in taking a child for an OT assessment. If you are worried or not even worried but need info, it is the best thing to do. Early intervention is much more effective.

Don't worry. The reason why she is slow in drawing is because she was doing it with the dumb (right) hand. She will get there. i am left handed and there is nothing wrong with the way i write, cut or draw. I never had problems ONLY with writing neatly in school. I for instance use a highlighter the wrong way around and pull the line from the right to the left. I write normally, my books are not scew (some lefties write in a very funny way).

She will adapt and for instance it is only now. My little one is 2 and is right handed. She keeps a pen or pencil correct in her hand so we think it will stay that way though.
