Dr. Terblanche @ Lin Med Hosp. Benoni

After a couple of months I thought I'd come back and give some more feedback with our experience after Dr. Stander.

I took the matter up with the The Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and they in-turn took the matter to the Ombudsman.
Dr. Stander's reply to my complaint was 90% lies to cover his own skin! He was so sarcastic in his reply...I don't have words for this man! To save people the trouble, I advise not electing Dr. Stander to be your OB/GYN. It's not worth the trouble.

Anyway, we're seeing Dr. Haacke now and his a fantastic doctor! He does charge more than medical aid rates, so be prepared to fork out co-payments at each consultation as well as for delivery. I assume this is only applicable to folks who don't have comprehensive / executive medical aid cover. Dr. Haacke's staff is great as well, from his nurse to the ladies at reception.

Dr. Haacke himself is a straight-forward person. He will take the required time to listen to your concerns and give the appropriate feedback. He doesn't beat around the bush. If he says something is blue and you think it's grey, he'll tell you why he says it's blue...in a professional manner.
If he has concerns, he'll let you know what you should do. Listen to him and you'll be fine.

At our 28-week visit our baby was supposed to weigh 1KG, she weighed 1.5KG. Dr. Haacke was concerned about my wife contracting gestational diabetes. We had to go to the pathologist for a glucose tolerance test (Pregnancy GTT) and he admitted her to hospital when he got the results back for observation. She was booked into the maternity ward and his staff took care of most of the heavy-lifting. He went to see her while in observation.

He explained a few things to us to think about and he really seems to care about his patients. He places emphasis on the important stuff!

It seems a lot of people prefer Dr. Haacke over Dr. Stander if you have a look at the delivery chart in the maternity ward. I'd recommend Dr. Haacke to anyone looking for a gyni at the Linmed hospital

The issue with the Mirena system.... Obviously Dr Stander didn't know that the Mirena was faulty, it just turned out that way. Basically the way it works (in my understanding) is that it contains 5-6 years worth of Progestrone that slowly releases into your system to ensure that you cannot fall pregnant. Now what happened with me was, the full 5-6 years worth of Progestrone was dumped into my system at once, which made me very sick and lead to my Pituitary Gland completely stop producing progesterone naturally. And it has never seemed to "switch back on again" - that's how Dr Terblanche tried to explain it to me so that I understood what was going on. So now my body has NO normal monthlies EVER without first having to take hormones, which also means, I do not ovulate unless we first kick start my period and then I follow up with hormones like Femara to make me ovulate.... Anyway, hope that makes a bit more sense?
Regarding Dr Stander, personally I cannot handle his so called "bed side manner" I find him rude and ubrupt. Yes I was 19 years old when I had my son, but I honestly feel that he treated me very badly and was constantly making rue comments about my situation! Yes I was young! But I wouldn't change my son for the world!
I will definitely be looking into Dr Haacke! Thank you so so very much for the recommendation

Please forgive me for finding this incredibly hard to believe. I asked him if my wife's blood pressure and weight is on par for how far and long she is. All I wanted was a yes or no answer and what to be careful about.
Instead, he tapped me on my chest, shoving me back into a corner, called me stupid and told me I know nothing!
His an absolute horrible doctor. How anyone finds this guy helpful and likable is beyond me.

I don't expect him to sit and answer questions for 3 hours. I also don't expect him to do what he did at both our visits!
At the first visit he said my wife is effed in her head...referring to 'pregnancy brain'. The way he said this was totally unnecessary and uncalled for.
A doctor is supposed to make his patients feel comfortable and assure them everything is okay if everything is okay; and if he/she has concerns, to raise it with us so we know what to avoid for everything to go smoothly.

I find this very surprising as I absolutely love Dr Stander. I feel so comfortable around him. He is busy and wants to do what needs to be done and I actually prefer it. We are also struggling to fall pregnant but everytime I leave his office, I feel a bit better and hopeful. I just think we are all so different and have different expectations. You just have to find that one gynae that you are comfortable and satisfied with. Hope you guys find the right gynae. I reported him to the HPCSA and to Medihelp when I got home after our appointment, then I came here to inform others as well.
I don't want anyone else to go through what we went through with this guy.

Please if you manage to find someone as wonderful as Terblanche, let me know because I would rather cut off my left leg than EVER set foot in Standers rooms again!

As I understand it, he inserted the faulty Mirena? If so, have you reported him for medical malpractice? It is, after all, his fault that your kinda infertile now...
If he did that to my wife...I'm afraid to even say what I'd do to him!

Anyway, The last gynaecologist left at the Linmed hospital is Dr. Haacke. His apparently a very good gyni and a lot of people recommend him. I didn't get this info from anyone I know, but from reading these forums, it seems a lot of folks are happy with him.

We went to his rooms after that horrific appointment and we were blown away. There wasn't a single seat available in his waiting room. This was the first sign that people recommend him.
I spoke to a lady at his reception, told her about my dilemma and she was absolutely shocked. She said that Dr. Haacke allocates 20 minutes per patient, but if you require additional time, I think she said the maximum time he'll give is 30 minutes, but I speak under correction here. I remember her mentioning a 30-minute visit if it's required but that's the only thing I didn't catch...I was quite upset at the time.

All we want is a doctor that takes 5-10 minutes to allow us to ask questions IF, and only IF, we have questions, and who treats and handles a lady like a lady.
I cannot speak for myself just yet on my experience with him as I haven't seen his face yet. Our first appointment with him is in 3 weeks time.

The only thing I can say for sure is, there is a co-payment for each visit if you don't have a high enough medical aid plan. I was hesitant at first, then I thought I'd rather pay a small fee, which for us is R250 per visit and have someone who cares about is patients, than ever have to see Stander's face again!

Perhaps he can be of assistance to you guys as well?
