I'm very lucky as one of our friends is a gynie at Unitas hospital and also a fertitlity specialist. We had a chat about the cost a while ago and we will get discount on the procedure.

If this cycle is not positive i'll see my gynie again and then do the 3rd round of Fertomid. After that we'll try IUI.

Liza, I dont mind the questions at all.
I took Fertomid last year for 4 cycles from about July - Oct. My gynae said at that time some people get preggies after taking Fertomid for 3 months so I left it and thought that we would try without it for a few months.

I went back to gynae this year March and he prescribed another 3 cycles of Fertomid 50mg and said that if it does not work then we will do IUI. So here we are now.

Hubby just phoned to say he did his thing and that it is so so akward because there are only women working there and they all know what you are doing there and you struggle to concentrate etc etc etc. So looks llike I must go in the next 1-2 hours to my doctor.

The reception lady at the doctor said she is not sure of the costs of the sperms washing but she thinks it is in the region of R 1 000.00. And my doctor asks another R 750.00 for the procedure - same costs as a consultation. Yesterday's scan will probably be around R 700 aswell and I am not sure what the bloodwork will cost. I think one is looking at about R 3 000 - R 5 000 per IUI.

Medical aid does not pay but mine has a savings account so some of it will come from there and the rest I will have to pay in installments.

We are exactly the same! Regular cycle no PCOS or Endo.

How long have you been taking Fertomid before deciding to do IUI?

This is my second cycle and i am also considering doing IUI.

What has the cost been as far and does your medical aid pay for the procedures?

Mine doesn't cover any expences for infertility.

Ninies - if his swimmers are a bit slow then the iui might be just the little boost they need to help get them to the egg.

@Mrs Smith - Thank you so much for your opinion. That is exactly how I was feeling about it, until I realised that I obviously dont have a problem as I do ovulate, have regular cycles and dont have any endo or PCOS. I do think there is a slowness with my hubby's sperms though. I think part of this procedure will also be the testing of his spermies. I am so pro for natural ways of doing things and that is why I struggled with the decision aswell. Anyways, IUI with medication only have a 20% success rate which is rather low.

I hope your headache goes away quick quick and that you feel better soon. I think you should not worry too much about the way you have been bd'ing as it sure sounds like you have covered all your bases. Baby dust to you hun!

Thanks Inca. Yes, I do tend to unfortunately suffer from headaches relatively often. Never fun. I don't often throw up from them but it does happen on occasion. Just glad the meds have kicked in now and it's leaving. I was trying to dodge taking meds in the fear they might somehow interfere wtih catchign that egg, but I gave up that fight this morning and just took them anyway. It was just Lotem (combo of paracetomol and ibuprofen) that I took so should be fine.

Ninies - that's exciting that your doctor might be able to fit you in for iui, and even more exciting that you got a smiley face to coincide with the doctor's scan! Sorry i didn't mean to sound negative about iui in my previous post. Just voicing my thoughts since you did as for opinions. I really hope it works for you so you can finally get your bfp!
