Thanks for the encouragement :)
I have settled myself in bed for today. Have the laptop with movies and magazines and I have oats porridge with seeds and raisins as well as rice cakes, an apple, banana, tea and 2L of water in arms reach. Will try make some eggs and toast later. Just want to get to a happy supply match to demand.

Two of my friends started a formula feed at night when breastmilk is low and baby is screaming, now they both formula feed only. I really want to breastfeed successfully.

Faffymum, I am so sorry you are feeling so depleted and tired. Three weeks is when babies normally "wake up" a bit and they tend to get more needy. You are doing GREAT! Just keep on doing what you are doing, feed on demand, sleep when baby sleeps (yes, really, leave EVERYTHING else - you need sleep). Your body will soon catch on to the up in demand.

I would also strongly suggest you take your baby to a chiropractor. I believe each and every baby can benefit from chiropractic adjustment. How was he born?

Formula is a downhill path, I'm afraid. The moment you give formula, he will drink less on you, supply will drop, you will give more formula and before you know it, your breastfeeding days are over.

Just hang in there. It will soon get better. Drink another eglonyl if you think it will help. Demand feed, demand feed, demand feed. Eat proteien rich foods and drink lots of liquids. Wear him in a wrap if you can so he can settle (You can literally take a 6 meter stretchy material and make your own stretchy wrap. You don't even have to stitch it. Otherwise you can buy one and it can reach you in two days. I can recommend if you like.)

Hi ladies.
So the eglonyl (1 pill and day) helped a lot. I was having a great time breastfeeding. Got through the initial nipple pain and it was smooth sailing. Now my boy is going through a growth spurt. He is 3 weeks old and for the past 3 days he has been crying from late afternoon until we finally get him to sleep at 12 ish. He is hungry and the supply is out by then. I really need it to improve soon. It is horrible. I feel like the worst parent forcing my baby to go to sleep without dinner. Do you think I should take 2 eglonyl to help my body along? I uunfortunately can't drink stacks of water and eat well or sleep, when my baby won't sleep. Hubby is going to push for formula if this doesn't get better soon.

Hi Pillpusher,

Thank you for your expert advice, it is wonderful to have a pharmacist opinion here (and soon to be mommy). :)

I would put a word of caution out there with regards to the Jungle Juice and Black berry thorn Elixir. Both are very high in sugar and might you put you at risk of developing thrush for baby and mom. Use very sparingly or avoid all together in my opinion.

We are still battling with Oral thrush that baby had from day 10 (now 5 weeks) and I can tell anyone that getting rid of the thrush and all the horrible symptoms that comes with it is not great.

Best thing to keep up good milk supply is drinking plenty of water or herbal teas and eating a balanced diet and rest as much as possible.

I've seen a lot of use of eglonyl (sulpiride) for improving lactation. I do think that you need to make the decision for yourself. The usual dose is 50mg three times a day and, yes, it does get excreted into breast milk but there are few reports (if any) of ill effects in infants.

A lot of women swear by Jungle Juice. There are various recipes for making it up, but Blackthornberry elixir is the main thing to take.

Faffymum,

I'm no expert on Eglonyl and like Deja said, only you can decide at the end of the day. I would personally hold off on it until you've seen a lactation consultant of a la leche league leader in your area.

One thing that you need to understand how this drug work is that the side effect of the drug is to produce more milk BUT even if you get more milk, your baby needs to empty the breast completely. If he doesn't do that each feed, your brain will just signal to produce less milk and counter acts with the drug. It can then lead to engorgement & mastitis.

That is how breastfeeding works. Supply and demand. If the demand is not there, the breasts will adjust to only how much baby is taking. If that makes sense.
