Hey momzee,

two facts is that disposable have a much worse smell, and you deal with a lot more leaking nappies as with cloth.

what i can recommend, is to get 1 or 2 cheap nappies, and just put it on and then show it to him. men is much more a seeing-is-believing creature.
maybe he still have the idea of the old style terry nappies and the steri nappy bin and that idea creeps him out

and if you buy 1 or 2 nappies each month, then it is not expensive at all. and then, the more you have, the more you save.

Bamboo microfibre nappies new is R90 each (think they are now about the cheapest. the nappy Shack also have plain nappies for R90.
then you can buy a pack of bamboo facebloths at PicknPay to boost it with - the micro fibre might not be enough for a 6 month old baby.

then there is a great 2nd hand market where you can get very good condition nappies for R50 and R60 than has maybe been OTB once or twice.
i have found great bargains on this group.

I just bought a ninja turtle nappy and my hubby as was sold. lol. Now he is buying them and I have to tell him to slow down until we know which one's work for us. You just have to find the trigger to the addiction ;p Good luck!

I want to get my 6 month old LG started on cloth diapers, but her dad is really against it! I think he does not really understand the concept of the modern cloth nappy, and he does not even want to discuss it so that I can explain it to him!

I think he is scared that if he should change a dirty diaper that it is too messy for him (I think in the last 6 months he only changed about 5 dirty diapers...)

Also, he keeps on moaning that it is way too expensive and that we cannot afford it. The more I tell him that it is going to cost a lot initially but in the long run we will save a lot, the less he listens and the more he complains.

Please help! I really really want to do the cloth diaper thing! Especially since we are planning on having two babas!

I use three different makes : Close Pop-ins - bamboo inner, quite absorbent, easy to use (Velcro fastener) but expensive and take long to dry, which makes life tricky if they're the only ones you have. The next make I have are by Flip (Realnappyco), I think are the most absorbent, the inner is artificial but works really really well. The nice thing about Flips is that you only need a couple of outer shells and then a bunch of inners. One downside is they're quite bulky. Lastly, Fancypants, a local nappy - they fit the best but aren't as absorbent as the flips. Their inners are 70% bamboo and 30% cotton. I'd say I use 50/50 disposables and cloth and use flushable bamboo liners with all of them. I feel guilty every time I throw a disposable away but damn, they're convenient sometimes!

if you want to try your hand at sewing join the Lappie Love facebook page. alot of helpful hints and alot of free patterns in the file section for all sorts of stuff.
its not so hard to make them. the first one will take a while, but once you get the hang of it, there is just no stopping :tmi:

i'm now making a few newborn ones - my 2nd attempt at neppy making and they look much more professional - see photo

Thats nice Stella, Gloie you fortunate if you know how to sew. Last time I sowed something was years ago in highschool. Maybe what you can do is go to pep and buy their towelling nappy as its cheap and get one of their fleece pants and try make a cover and your own custom aio with a microfibre and bamboo insert inside the towelling , you can get those microfibre and bamboo large dish cloths from PnP , Makro or Checkers. Then test the wetness with water and see how it goes.
