The bum beetles come as one item but you can take it apart. You can only buy extra inserts at R22 each.

Yes, I have made a few of my own nappies, I will post a picture just now. I don't have an overlocker so it was sewn back to front and turned inside out. I am cutting more tomorrow and getting a lady to just overlock them for me, it will be much quicker. You can also sew the velcro on or be lazy like me and just use a Snappy.

They are dead easy to make. It works well with the Terry cloth and a bit of Flannel or fleece for a stay dry feel. I have some fleece but want to try the flannel next.

Yes the choices are so overwhelming but not nearly as people overseas, there are hundreds to choose from there.

i read through all your posts and im feeling a lot better about my choice to use cloth nappies for my 2nd child.

All that i find very overwhelming is which one to choose, which make (bambino mio/stegi/mother nature). All seems to have pros and conns.

Marijke, thank you so much for the pictures, i was very confused how it works because i just know the old normal square nappies but now i understand. its actually the same as the square just a bit less material around the waist.

2kidmamma, i love those nappies at bumbeetles but now i just have a question. it doesnt look as if they sell the nappy inside and the waterproof seperate, on the site it says:

Buying 1-4 nappies the price of one nappy is R99 5-9 nappies – R89/each 10 and more nappies – R85/each

So you cant reuse the nappy like the 'waterproofs' at stegi or is it still seperate? they talk about inserts, do you just take those out?

is the velcro better or the clasps (clips?)

If you use the right materials they will be just as absorbant as the ones we buy, may not look as fabulous but still do the trick. You could perhaps just buy the pretty covers like the Mother nature rainbow covers. What I am doing is taking the terry squares I have and cutting them according to the pattern. If you want I have a PDF pattern I can email you? It's supposed to be for a toddler of a year but I found it slightly too small, I would make it slightly bigger.

HeleneS, you are really making me worry about buyin pocket nappies now. Are you allowed to tumble dry the covers? I am looking at buying the Bumbeetles one that Shared the link for yesterday. The lady sent me a nice email telling me about her personal experience with the mother nature nappies and why she preferred the pocket nappies and her main reason was the drying time and how much faster it was becuase you take the nappy apart. She did say the inserts stay wetter for longer so you should have extra. I have two Mother Nature waterproofs and they were R95 each. I used the PEP waterproof with an ordinary Glodina square last night and they worked very well. I just can't figure out how to fold the nappies anymore. i used to know when I worked for my Mothers day Care centre but that was like 17 years ago and can't remember anymore. I know there is special "Boy Fold" I have about 20 squares and so I want to use thos inbetween, I want to fold them for the school before I take them so they are ready to be used. This will just be until I have a full set of shaped nappies. HeleneS, if you are not happy with the Nappy, I see you can return it within 14 days for your Money Back. Lientjie, I agree with you totally about using too much water to rinse off nappies, that kinda defeats the whole object.

I'm lazy too - just chuck it in the bucket and close the lid. I do add a couple of drops of tea tree oil to the bottom of the bucket (sorry, forgot to mention that).

I figure that if I use loads of water to rinse each one, I'm not really saving money or being as "green" as I could be.

If the smell bothers you (although it's really not that bad), you can always add another essential oil (eg lavender) to help take the edge off.

My husband is all for the cloth nappies - although he doesn't have to deal with it, so why would he mind? hehe

@HeleneS - that's why I didn't buy the all-in-one type - it takes ages to dry! The MN w/p costs R100 each. I've tried both the BM and Stegi, and I really prefer the MN.

The folding isn't really a big deal. I fold all of them once it's dry (complete with liner) and keep them stacked next to the compactum. Then you just grab one and insert it in the cover.

I've been making my own wipes for about a month now. It works really well! I use those kitchen cloths that you buy on the roll and cut them in 4. I then fold them in 3, with one part overlapping with the cloth on top to make my own pop-ups. I keep them wet in a plastic wipes container (from Pigeon). I prefer to keep mine perfume free, so I use aqueous cream and Bennetts Aqueous Bath Drops.

@Anina - when you made your own nappies, how many layers of the supersip material did you add? I'm thinking about making my own "booster pads" to use with a normal square nappy and the "modern" type w/p.
