StellaK has the max UIF amount finally gone up? It was R4700 per month when I last claimed.

This will be my first pregnancy getting PAID leave! We get 6 months, 3 months paid, 3 unpaid, but I'm taking one month's annual leave and 3 months paid leave. With my daughter I changed jobs at 22 weeks pregnant so didn't qualify for paid leave, and then again with my son I got a job offer when 6 weeks pregnant and again didn't qualify as not with company for a year.

I got a call for a job a few weeks ago and I was like HELL NO! lol. Not again!

I got UIF payouts after I was back at work already with both kids. Just one lumpsum. So definitely don't rely on this money being available every month.

I didn't vomit yesterday! Excited about that. But had these days before and thought, hey maybe I'm getting better and then followed by 3 days of keeping nothing down....so I don't want to get my hopes up.

Hi Angie,

Most company's don't pay a maternity benefit, as it is not required by law. Although that said, some do have a benefit.
For example, my company will pay me 100% salary the first month, 75% the 2nd, 50% the 3rd and 25% the 4th, all on a pro-rata basis.
If I claim the company benefit, I may not resign within a year of ending maternity leave, if I do I will have to pay the company back the full amount.

hope you are all well.

BAngie, you must find out what is your company's policy regarding maternity leave.

UIF is there for those who gets unpaid leave. UIF will pay 38-50% of a capped amount depending on what your company pays.
thus, if your company pay you 100% of your salary, you can not claim UIF.
if you get paid partially you can claim UIF but you will only get a small amount.
if you get unpaid leave you qualify for the maximum amount from UIF which is about R5200/month.

should you claim from UIF, please also do not rely only on them as they might not pay on time - i only received my payment when lb was 8 months old.

the first payment will also not be at the end of the month, they only pay the 1st payment 6 weeks after baby is born - this is to check for fraud and if your company paid you something.

Hi Ladies - thanks for all the comments on the weight gain.. I'll just keep a good balance and exercise like crazy after birth. Angie - I think each company's policy is different - there is however some kind of Law regarding it (what that it I can't remember.. will quickly google for you) Our company policy works as follows: We are covered for 60% and need to recover 40% from UIF.
