Hi Rhodine,
Zani also had a terrible cough towards the end of last week and over the weekend. I took her to the paediatrician because it sounded as if she was smoking a packet of Lexington every day! He said that it is not advisable to give cough suppressants to children and that you should rather give them something to help them get rid of the nonsense in their chests. Zani had a bit of a phlegm cough, so I don’t know if is the same as Shaun. The cough mixture that he gave me (to help loosen the phlegm) is called Prospan. I give her 2,5ml three times a day. He also referred her for physiotherapy and that has definitely made a huge difference. She is sounding 150% better!
As for food, you just follow what you think is right. Introduce new things maybe a lunch time when he will be more receptive of them. I know Zani wants familiar things to eat at supper time – that is when she eats! You can also try some eggs? I cut up a tomato into little blocks and fry that for a bit and then just scramble an egg and mix it in. Sprinkle over some cheese and serve! She loves it. What I also do is make a large stew over the weekend. On Sunday I made a pot of chicken thighs, potato, sweet potato, zuchinni and carrots. I put a little bit of chicken spice (you can put whatever you like) in for flavour and then just stew over a slow heat. When chicken is cooked I take it off the bone and put it in the food processor to chop it a bit so that it is easier to chew. Mash the veggies and mix. Yesterday we had some of the stew and pasta, so you can mix it with whatever you like. Oh, you can also try the Woolies meals for toddlers (mac & cheese, lasagne, cottage pie etc). It’s great for when you do not have time to cook, which is every day during the week for me
Zani’s routine is a follows:
8:00 – Mieliepap or Matabla pap.
8:30 – 200ml formula (S26 Gold 3)
10:00 – Rooibos tea with milk
11:30 – 12:00 – Lunch (veggies with rice/pasta etc)
12:30 – 200ml formula
15:00 – Yogurt
18:00 – Dinner
19:30 – 200ml formula at bedtime
This is more for during the week. Over weekends she is much more of a grazer and will nibble the whole time on rice cakes, blue berries, flings (yes, I KNOW!), biltong , viennas, cheese etc. Basically, I just make sure she has something to nibble on the whole time because otherwise she just does not seem to phased to even eat! Drives me nuts, but I’m sure she won’t starve herself
Anyway, what I wanted to say to you is this…Listen to other people very selectively. Take from their advice those things that may work for you and just ignore the rest. There is nothing wrong with the food you give you baby, so I don’t see why they would criticise you because of it. I used to make myself miserable listening to all the “helpful” advice people gave to me regarding feeding etc. I was constantly in tears feeling like a terrible mother. Now, I have just decided that since my daughter is happy, healthy and thriving I must be doing something right! Now I just follow my gut and my daughter’s cues.
