Hello Moms and Moms-to–Be
(here comes a long post)
I have been checking in to see if there is news on the new arrivals. Congrats to Skitter and Joey! God bless your sons. Thanks Chanz for all the updates, we keep you and Michael in our prayers.
I would like to share my birth story and some photos but couldn’t add photos on my phone and every time I just get typing, something happens and I have to start again.
Anyway here is our story:
For those that don’t know, I was planning on having a VBAC.
Friday 30 Sep was my last day at work and doc appointment. He was concerned that the baby’s head had not engaged and she was posterior (face up) at the last 3 visits. He said that it wasn’t impossible to deliver a posterior baby naturally although my labour could be longer and more painful.
I went home a bit early from work, then did a bit of shopping and went to the salon. Bad thing is that I didn’t eat dinner; luckily I went to bed early.
At 3am I woke up with a familiar pain. Could it be? Checked the time and it was 3:31. Told myself to go back to sleep because it could be a long day ahead of us. A few minutes later, I had another one. I couldn’t believe how quickly the pains were coming and got out of bed. I told my hubby that I was having labour pains but didn’t need to go to hospital yet.
I sms-ed my mom at 4:30 that she has to come (she lives 2 hrs away) because I was sure I was in labour. I needed someone I can trust to take care of Logan while I was in labour and hospital. I needed my husband to be with me. I had a bath, but could only stay in for a few minutes because that is no position to be in for contractions. Got my hubby up and made coffee at about 6:00. Bathed and dressed Logan and gave him breakfast.
By this time my back was sweating and I was battling to speak through the pain. DH suggested that we time the contractions. We were shocked to see that they were 2-3 min apart. I could no longer wait for my mom and called MIL. (Urgh) When she arrived she was convinced that it was a “false alarm” because if my contraction were so close together according to her my waters should have broken. Anyway, the minute she got there I put a linen saver on the car seat and we were off. Thank God it was Saturday and there was no traffic, so we go to the hospital quickly about 7:30.
All I kept thinking is that if they tell me I am 1cm I am going to be so disappointed. I was taken to the labour ward and hooked up to a monitor; my contractions were 1:30 apart. After just a minute or two of monitoring, my waters broke. The sister did an internal and I was 4-5cm dilated. Yeah! I thought that I was going to get the natural birth I so badly wanted. My doc came in and after examining me I could see that there was a problem. He explained that her head is still “floating” she is still face up and face first instead of crown first. We were given birth options, either wait with no guarantee that she will engage and try with forceps. Her position could result in facial injury. Or bail out and do the caesarean. We bailed.
I was prepped for theatre, by this time my contraction were 40 sec apart and very strong. That made it very difficult for the anaesthetist to keep me in the position for the spinal. I was literally screaming with pain, the contraction were sore but manageable when I could change positions, but to be bent forward like that – very eina! We got it in after the 3rd try and voila – no more pain.
Just a few minutes in I asked DH if they are already busy, when the doc said, here comes that baby. Over the screen came these tiny little feet, and then she gave a cry. They towelled her down and brought her to me, just perfect. There was a tiny nick on her forehead from when they opened me but nothing serious. I felt nauseous and told my husband to take her. They gave her a bit of oxygen, while they stitched me up. Within minutes it was all over. I was not disappointed at all, and feel that we made the right decision. I was wheeled into recovery; she was brought to me in a towel so that we could have skin to skin and breastfeed. (She weed on me)
Here are her stats:
Chelsea van der Merwe; Born 01/10/2011 at 9:20
3.09kg and 49cm tall
Apgar 9/10 and 10/10
She is healthy and perfect and my recovery is going so well! We were discharged only 2 days after the birth.
