@ Tanz i had two elective Cesearian births and I breastfed. You can take pain meds while breastfeeding you will just find your baby to be "sleepier" than normal for a day or so from when you were in hosp and they administer it via a drip there. I didn't find this applied to when i was home and just taking Stopaynes and Voltarin for about 4 days after I got home. i had a very similar experience to Fankies 2nd birth but I was able to have my baby with me from almost right after the birth. Babies can be incubated with both natural and C-sect births so it's not just with babies brought into this world with medical intrevention much to popular belief. I was also really ill after my spinal but only for the first day. I am actually Pro natural if it's what the mom wants for herself and am of the opinion that there are big Pro's and Con's for both birth choices. So the choice is really up to you and nobody can make your mind up for you. Also to the point that Justine made, no doctor can force you to decide what birth to take. Your doctor should be clear up front like mine did that he is known for his ceasers and that he will give me all the pros and cons of both but in his opinion he sees more patients these days with problems as a result of natural birth trauma and spends most of his time rectifying those issues like Prolapses etc as a result of those tears etc you referred to earlier. Therefore he gave me a choice to decide and if I still wanted natural he probably would have done it but I probably would have changed gynies because its not his norm and I would have wanted a Pro natural doctor then. He would never have forced me to do what I didn't want and I can't beleive that anybody of any sound mind would ever be bullied in to a birth different to what they want. I am excluding now doctors with hidden agenda's who all along say it's FINE to go natural and then a week or two before the time suddenly say "Oh you have a HUGE baby we have to do a ceaser" because I am not denying that this does happen. But if you discuss it and your doctor tells you it's only ceaser for him and you really want natural then you should think about finding another doctor that is known to be Pro natural or visa versa. The choice is really yours. And this is such a touchy subject like many other debatable subjects but still one that should be dealt with with respect by the people that answer. Everybodies experiences should be heard out at any rate and nobody belittled for theirs. We should all just be trying to give you the feedback you have asked for.

Hi Tanz,

Have a look at my website www.beautifullyborn.co.za, I am more than happy to answer any questions you might have about HypnoBirthing.

I had a pretty traumatic natural birth for my first, long, painful etc, used HypnoBirthing for my 2nd birth and had a pain-free labour with no medication that lasted 1 hour 48 minutes. No tearing or episiotomy.

It changed my life and is what inspired me to train as a practitioner

Tanz, very controvercial, as all have their own opinion.

With nr. 1 there was never a choice for me. I opted for drug free natural. It didn't work. I begged for pain meds, and then for an epi. And in the end I had an emergency section after 12h and being 8cm due to fetal distress. (I was 'put down' with this one.)

Second time I wanted a vbac, but went into preterm labor, meds to stop didn't work, and another emergency section. Had spinal, and threw up in theater.

None of these 2 were good experiences.

This time its an elective csection. I don't really have a choice. But they say elective is better than having to go through natural ending in section. So on the one hand I am hoping I go into labor and get to hospital just in time to push. But on the other hand, I don't want all that pain for nothing AGAIN.

Its all your own choice. But if you want natural, stand your ground and fight for it.

I cannot comment on having a c-section baby...

I gave natural birth - this is what i posted on moomie about a year ago:

The birth went well in the end - it was LONG, very very long, my water broke on the 19th at about 6:30am and I started going into labour at about 9:20am.... Went to the hospital and saw the Dr was assessed every 4 hours and at about 7:15pm they induced me to bring on more cramps and to help me dilate as I had only dilated 4cm by this time.... Anyways by midnight I was in so much pain I could die – they gave me morphine to ease the pain – the Dr’s said to me I needed to have at least 3 contractions of 40 seconds in a 10 minute period in order for me to really start pushing – this happened at 4:00am on the 20th..... I pushed and pushed and pushed for almost 4 hours and Luke was born at 7:55am on 20th May 2010 – Because I had pushed for so long Luke had gone into a little distress and trauma and because each time I pushed I had no energy he kept being sucked back into me – the umbilical cord got wrapped around his neck but he was okey and he had some bruising and swelling and blisters on in his head from all the pushing and pulling, he was given to me to hold for most of the morning but was put into ICU for observation for a day – all the swelling is gone and his head is not cone shaped anymore – the bruising is clearing very very well and so are the 2 blisters.... He was born with a weight of 3.825kg and length of 58cm and head circumference of 35cm...

Now for the gross part... I tore in 2 places – but all stitched up and doing okey now....The pain I experienced is something I could never explain to anyone – but I can promise you that it is worth it.....

Each of us have different opinions and different experiences - If I had to have another baby - I would give natural birth again. Its sore while going through the process but that paid is so quickly forgotten once you hold your baby!

My mom also mentioned to me that most Dr's op for c-sections - reason's being that its an "in and an out" - no waiting "forever" for baby to come etc etc...

Dont let anyone's experiences scare you! Decide what you would like to do and take it from there...

Good Luck with your decision!

Justine, I just pushed your karma button - very well said!

I had drug free natural (Hypno)birth. Unfortunately, my gynae did not respect my wishes and induced me (according to him because of my history, my first LO was stillborn) and ruptured my membranes, which I really wanted to avoid. Because of these interventions, I had an extremely fast and painful labour, which I only managed to endure with the help of HypnoBirthing breathing techniques. Under 'natural' circumstances, it doesn't have to be so painful and with our next baby I am determined to get the completely intervention-free birth I always wanted.

I know I'm going to be stoned now, but I am of the opinion that a caesar should only be performed when medically necessary. There are tons of articles about the topic and it is scientifically proven that vaginal birth is the safest for mom and baby. Nefertiti on this forum will be able to give you lots of information on that.

You may want to read all the ladies' birth stories on the respective thread to get a nice impression of the different birthing methods incl. pros and cons.

Good luck with whatever you decide on - in the end it is your body and your baby, so do whatever feels right for YOU!
