Palesa my family also believes in the more reasonable 10 day rule thing too. Anyway DH's family is mostly in the Eastern Cape so I guess we'll be following my family's rules...

Momtoc I’m Tsonga- but it’s really not about the nationality, rather the actual family. My family is very modern in comparison to most families so we tend to bypass most 'traditions'.

Xhosa’s are huge on circumcision when the boy is older and able to understand the significance of the transition into manhood (at about 16-20 years depending on maturity). Although we’ll obviously do it in a hospital (and not the mountains) he will still have the whole ceremony afterwards. I would honestly prefer to have my boy circumcised at birth, like my brother was, so that it’s over and he won’t remember. But hey….he’s gona be a ‘xhosa man’ lol!

Are any of you ladies going home or having your mom’s stay with you in the first couple of months? Luckily I have my mom 2km’s away so she can always pop in. most of my friends spent 3 months at home with their mothers and only returned to their homes when baby was stronger.

yho momtoc you were lucky i have a female manager that never had kids maybe thats why she`s being such a witch. i cant wait to go on maternity leave not seeing her for 4 months will be a blast for me.

i wish i could resign before going on maternity leave but it`s mission impossible unless i have lot of money saves like 4 months salary.

Palesa, I used to work for ABSA That policy of theirs came into effect when I was about 2 months preggies with my lg but I managed to dodge that one somehow cause I never went back to work. I gave 24hours notice roughly a week before I had to return to work I had an awesome female manager & cool BA at the time but their were alot of changes in the branches & my manager was moved to another branch when I was on maternity leave & the BA was also on her way out so she just did my resignation & the I obviously had to give them a months pay back because of the 24 hour notice..........Head Office never queried the other stuff & I got my pension ha ha ha

Magz, I also find this whole culture/belief thingy very interesting. I just love learning about it. You said hubby is Xhosa, right? What are you if you don't mind me asking?

Mags i have no idea the backround or anything of the sort was told by my mom and mom inlaw that you can buy from 7 months so i have about a month left to go crazy. No one is alllowed in my house till the that piece of the ambilical cord falls it`s called 10 days. only immediate family no relatives.

i think mine is also team blue but will see on saturday.

Palesa- regarding the superstitions- Can you explain the reasons/belief behind it? when are you allowed to start shopping?

I really find it interesting how different families have different rules. The only thing I have to deal with is not letting ‘outsiders’ in our home until baby is at least 3 months old. We can only have immediate family see the baby in the first 3 months because outsiders can bring ‘bad omens’ *sigh*. Mind you, DH’s family will probably enforce this, while my family thinks it’s BS and a little overboard! lol!

mosaneo, I can only imagine your frustration with the company but like palesa said, don't resign without another job in the bag. I know it's asking alot but like you said, you can't afford to not have a job & remember, you DO have rights as an employee & if the company isn't helping, then go to labour law.

palesa, I honestly think it's all in the mens head when it comes to all these preggy symptoms - feeling sick, the heartburn ha ha ha

I'm just as lazy putting on creams etc but being pregnant just does something to me. I'm such a well student putting on cream morning & night. Too scared to see a stretchmark on me LOL!!!
