Bilingual kids

Hi jusdawn, I noticed that with first LG she was saying a lot more at the age 20 months than our 2nd lg. Our first was mostly exposed to eng during this time whereas the 2nd lo is exposed to french and english. Now she is 22 months and has all of a sudden started talking soo much. Still only a few french words, but understands when you give her simple tasks. Everything else in eng.
Speak to your paed, but i guess he's just taking it all in and once he starts......they'll be no stopping him.

Joli - i agree with 2kidmamma, try to stay clear of the eng and explain by using gestures.Not easy when there's always something to be done but they learn so fast!!
I've just applied for lo at french pre school. Already a waiting list of 104 pupils and only 40 places. So will also apply to english and madarin one just to make sure she has a place next year september.

I read extensively about raising a kid bilingual and most books say that they will speak quite late, but when they do they are fully bilingual.
I would take him to the pead though to rule out other problems.

We live in Angola so my 22 month old son is exposed to Portuguese daily. His nanny speaks only Portuguese and in the home his father and I mostly speak English. However, our son doesnt speak!!!! He says up and please but nothing else. He understands both languages fluently and can follow instructions in each but refuses wo speak. Do any of you think this is because of the exposure to 2 languages???

I'm Xhosa, DH is Tswana. We dnt understand each others languages well so we speak English. My Tswana is getting much better, DH is not even trying to speak Xhosa but I dnt really mind.
So it's gonna b interesting to see what Ruru's 1st sentence will b. Xhosa, Tswana or English.....

Nope, I think you must steer clear of the English totally otherwise you can probably stop because it wont work like it should and you will just get more frustrated. Keep trying, it will take time but I am sure you can do it. If you have to be illustrative of what you want while you are saying it in Afrikaans then do so. Like if you want to say "Megan, gaan sit jou koppie in die kombuis asb" Then you take your cup and show her the cup while you say it. When you walk into the kitchen say to her "Megan, dit is die Kombuis" You have to do it each time so she starts to connect that room with the word Kombuis. That is just an example.

2KM - I'm trying, but it's quit difficult I must admit. Kayla understands but Megan doesn't understand a word a say! So then I have to repeat everything in English again and then I just forget and then it's all English again. Do you think I should be repeating it in English??
