Hasie you are right, Whey-based formula will not work for a highly sensitive/allergic child. Luckily my LG is tolerating it.

I should test goatmilk on her, spending R750/month on Pepticate will bankrupt us before she reaches 2years LOL.

So there's also Goatmilk-yoghurt?

Pinkmommy hope you come alright with Alpi

PinkMommy, fresh goatsmilk is almost impossible to find during winter. Woolies should stock it again from September, but I found some this weekend at Broadacres Spar and Fruit & Veg in Fourways. So the farms must be producing again, so I'm sure you'll be able to get milk soon. In the mean time use Alpi, its NOT formula milk, just powdered goatsmilk. But its much stronger than the fresh milk and can cause cramps if you use it the way they suggest.

I mix it 1 formula milk scoop (5ml) per 50 ml of water, the way they suggest on the tin makes it very very strong and then baby cramps up badly. The price for a tin of Alpi is between R90 and R130 depending on where you buy. Even the different Dischem's sells it at different prices, so if you find it cheap, buy lots!

The fresh milk and yoghurt that I bought this weekend is from Mooiplaas, maybe goole them and see if you can't buy frozen milk in bulk from the farm as that will be much cheaper than buying from Woolies or using the Alpi. The milk can last for 3 - 4 months in the freezer so if you stock up before the winter, you should be able to get through the winter without problems and just use Alpi if you run out.

PinkMommy...do you guys have a Pick n Pay? They have a goats milk powder formula.. My cousin switched to this as she also struggled getting the fresh goats milk at woolies...

Hi,

My girl is also lactose and soy intolerant. Now my question is, what do I give her from 1 year? Her formula doesn't have a follow up. She refuses rice milk. And we live in a smallish town, I've been battling 3 weeks now with Woolies to get hold of goats milk. Any other suggestions?

I mainly cook all her food myself. And check all the labels carefully for hidden milk solids before I buy anything for her.

Hi Claudia

Thanks for the links. The one about the hypoallergenic formula - he is on Nutramigen and sadly we have tried EVERY other formula on the market before resorting to this (as we were told to do so by the paediatrician after the allergy test results)
The lactose free formula - here we were recommended the soy formula - but he's allergic to it.
the other 2 articles were really interesting!!!
Thanks very much for posting the links - its great information :)

as for the breastfeeding...Im not sure it was that as when I gave him the bottle it contained breastmilk and he was always more than happy to take it. He doesnt really suck at all. he cant even keep the dummy in his mouth. I think the breastfeeding issue stemmed down to him being too lazy! I know that sounds ridiculous. But the milk pretty much falls out the bottle so he would just move his jaw up and down to get the milk out (he still does). He sucks very rarely.

Patty - I havent heard of the formula you are using. But the formula that I think the specialist is going to change us to is Elecare which is the same as Neocate. Infact the first time I saw him, he increased the reflux meds and told me if there was no improvement, to change immediately to Elecare as then its most likely allergies and not so much reflux....here they prefer to "guess" than just do the bloody tests....so when we went to france, we did the tests there. But they recommended we use Nutramigen and not Elecare because just like you have said, Elecare (Neocate) is a last resort and they said we should try Nutramigen first. Which was going alright until about 3-4 weeks ago.

Claudia I havent tried the HA varients as we dont get them here...well anything that is equivalent to it here, I would have tried, since I have tried all the formula's on the market.

Thanks for all the information and feedback girls!! I will let you know what the specialist says :)
