question-circle Allergic to dairy and soy

@ meags, I remember reading an article saying that the hypoallergenic dairy formulas are tolerated by about 90% of babies with dairy allergies because the cows milk protein (the coes milk protein that is usually the cause of the problem) has been partially hydrgenised...... have you tried one of the HA varients available in the UK?

BTW I just thought I'd jump in here (because I used to make this mistake) human milk has one of the highest concentrations of lactase compared with other mammals. Most people who are dairy intolerant are so because of the casein in cows milk - which goats milk doesnt have (or does in much lower quantities), which is why people who are cows milk intolerant, can often use it....
Lactose or milk sugar intolerance is not commonly observed in infants The lactase enzyme reaches its maximum level in the human intestine soon after birth and declines after age 3 1/2, so symptoms of insufficient lactase may not begin to show up until after this age.
If their is a true lactodse intolerance (and symptoms of cows milk protein and lactose intolerance are the same) you could also supplement with lactase drops (a few drops before each feed). I dont know where you would get them in the US, but I know that Dischem sells it in SA:)

True lactose intolerance in babies is actually quite rare, but often be cutting lactose out of the diet, lactase (the enzyme used to digest lctose) is reduced and a secondary lactose intolerance can result.

Just a question Meags....Do you think thats why you had issues with breastfeeding - I know you had to toss out your pumped suppy, Do you think either the dairy you were eating/or the lactose in your milk was upsetting and hurting his tummy making it sore to eat?????? Shame poor baby, you've really been having a hard time:(

Patty, being highly allergic myself, i've been reading labels all my life. I make all my kids food myself.

At least its easier these days than when i was a kid. The labels are much more spesific and there are more products that is made for people with allergies.

I'm wondering about the milk you talked about, if it is Whey based, its still made of cows milk isn't it? So a highly sensitive kid would still be allergic to it.

I'm so glad i tried goatsmilk! Its made my life so much easier!

Hasie allergies are such a nightmare, esp on kids! I find that I always have to scrutinise every food I buy for LG, its actually easier to just cook her foods myself!

hope they outgrow this soon.

Meags, my Claudia is the same. And even the most refined or broken down stuff still affects her. I give her goats milk. Yes i know that its not good enough, but then i make sure she gets what she is lacking from the rest of her food. The lactose in goatsmilk is closer to breast milk than that in cows milk and my hyper sensitive kids has no problem with it so i think its worth a try.

Meags we are using Pepticate for LG cos she also has so many allergies. It's Whey-based I think  she's doing very well on it, been using it for about 4months now.

There's also Neocate, but that's normally reserved as the last option.

Hope u come right with the specialist.

Ladies...

If your baby is allergic to dairy and soy what formula do you give them??
Here in USA we have a formula called Nutramigen and it's rice based. However it DOES still contain soy oil and casein (milk protein) that is totally broken down so it's easier for them to digest and apparently babies with allergies usually tolerate this.

However my baby is still suffering with bad diarrhoea and vomitting so we are now most likely changing to a formula that is made only from amino acids (I am waiting to see the specialist first before making the change).
