Help- I'm officially a cloth nappy user!!

Sarah and Gerne, i have had soooooo many comments about cloth nappies its not even funny. Most of them where before i had my baby and I got these looks saying: she'll come to her senses when she sees how much work a new baby is.

My sister in law told me not to be stupid because washing bottles takes up so much time already and who is going to wash the nappies? So I just said, I want to try and if it doesn't work then so be it.

Gerne, I fold the liner around the long part bottom of the nappy where boeta makes his poo. It normally catches most of it, but if I leave him to sit for 5 min with the poo nappy (like when you wanna make sure he's done...) then some of it comes onto the elastics of the cover at the bottom where it goes around the legs. So my covers gets washed after a poo nappy and re-used after a pee nappy.

Anina, should i just ask for felt at metro?
do you just put the liner flat into your home made nappy? because you then cant put it around the middle piece like a normal square nappy.

Henko's poo was firm so the nappy didnt even get a mark on but im so scared of the runny ones that is still to come

Oh Sarah, i know what you mean, a lady looked at me this morning when i told her what im doing as if im stupid. she really had a frown on her face and i wanted to ask her "WTF is YOUR problem" LOL sorry. She asked why and i said for the enviroment and to save money, she just looked at me as if im crazy!

I've tried to register so many times, no luck. Anyway, I'm just into my 3rd trimester with my first little 'blob'; recently moved to Pretoria and battling to make friends and hoping to meet other like-minded mommies who don't roll their eyes and sigh when I mention breastfeeding and cloth nappies!!! I'm wanting to go the cloth nappy route as much as possible - lots of reasons!

I have been given a pack of size small (5-7kg) Bambino Mio nappies (12 nappies, 4 covers), I have a started pack or size small (5-7kg) Stegi nappies (2 nappies, one waterproof) and about 12 flat terry nappies and the same in muslin squares.

So, my first question: which nappy is best for newborns? I'm happy to try and make some if someone could tell me which pattern (the flat like BM or shaped like Stegi) and what sort of sizes etc. I've been playing around with my scraps and it just seems that whatever I do, the crotch is too bulky for a newborn baby.

I prefer nappies where you can take the nappy out of the cover for quicker drying and would prefer to add a booster pad rather than have a very bulky middle which would take longer to dry.

Any ideas?

Hi, i really have porrige brain. I didn't give any measurements for the nappies.

The first size was: 40 cm x 30 cm
Second size: 50 cm x 35 cm

The stroke in the middle is 10 cm wide on all the nappies.

I cut the nappy cloth, then put a 10 cm wide felt stip in the middle with a 10 cm wide terry cloth stip over. So the middle section is 3 layers. It works the best if you put the felt and the terry cloth sections together, overlock it, then sew it to the main nappy. Make sure you sew a line through the middle of the section as well as I have had these little middle pieces stretching and behaving badly if they are not stuck on well...

Gerne, I ALWAYS use a liner. Yes the nappy can get very wet, but it normally doesn't bother them to much. It only gets cold if air gets onto it. I always use baby powder, it does help to keep the bum a little more dry. If you know the nappy is wet, change it. You will soon find that they only make a big pee about 3 times a day.

My nappy routine:
6:00 : normally a very wet night nappy with poo.
10:00: before his morning nap so that he goes to bed with a dry bum.
12:00: When he wakes up from the nap.
16:00: Normally a wet nappy
18:30: Normally a poo before bath time.

So I use about 5 nappies a day unless he has a runny tummy or other problem.

2kidmamma if baby poos in the nappy just after you put it on, you might be lucky enough to just replace the liner. It has happened to me often that Stefan has a poo just after I change him, and if it was a firm poo, then nothing escaped the liner so I just trow that away and put a new liner on, so you save a nappy.
