@Melisue - do they know what causes the fungus in old mattress? The newer type mattresses generally have very big breathing holes and with regularly vacuuming shouldnt harbour any fungus.

Did they perhaps stay at the coast?

Thanks Ladies for all the valuable advice!

I am going to buy the new mattress, even though it might be perfectly fine to reuse ... I guess for me the doubt is in my mind now so it will always bother me.

I have the nomal Angelcare monitor but will def get breathing pad this time. I figure if med aid will cover it then I am also going to try get one of the others I mentioned that clip onto nappy. Those sound nice because they are travel friendly and will work anywhere - car seat, pram etc and they also avail at dischem for around R800

As long as med aid will pay I will try get as much as I can :P

Have a wonderful week all and hope this weather clears up soon so we can all start enjoying summer!

Snoekie - I think it was you that was interested in the Bam+Boo cloth nappies! They annouced this morning that their company is closing down.
So, i think its the best time to order now before all the nappies run out if you are going to use it!

I definitely agree that the Angel Care Sound and Movement Monitor definitely works, and is the best on the market...

We bought ours for our LG in 2010, and have had quite a few scares in the past! My LG had moved off the sensor pad - she was quite a restless sleeper - and ended up at the footend of the cot and that alarm went ballistic! Not a sound you want to hear at 3 in the morning. Hubby and i were in that room faster than a flash, still half asleep!

Would definitely recommend you get it... Dischem sometimes have them on special so keep an eye out for that...

Tazzy9,
We are also looking at buying the angelcare monitor. Also heard a lot of good feedback on it. A friend of ours baby is now about 1,5 yrs old. They never removed the monitor, think they just forgot. Then the other night the alarm went of and when they went to the room, their boy was blue around the lips. When she picked him up he took a DEEP breath. So the monitor saved their baby's life. they took him to the hospital but couldn't find anything wrong with him. I will definately be buying one.
We still need to buy the new matress. Where can I buy one?

Melisue,
I don't know about reusing matresses, We got a cot as a gift from family and also the old matress, The matress is slightly mouldy, so we decided to rather buy a new matress. We didn't say anything to the family as we didn't want to offend anyone. If you do decide to use the matress again, I would have it cleaned by professional company Dry cleaners or someone that steam cleans. I have never heard about that clip that goes on to the nappy, but it sounds really good.
Sorry to hear that your family had to go through something that horrible...
