Hapi- it's a very sensitive subject but here's why i wouldn't keep a downs baby:
I used to work in a special needs school back in England, the kids are amazing, they truely are such wonderful happy little beings BUT a lot of the time their 'normal' siblings suffer a huge lack of attention and in many cases become quite rebellious, some even hypocondriacts because they see the Drs give the downs child so much attention.
I have a 2 year old son and i know having a downs sibling would defer too much attention from him. To tell you the truth having twins is also deferring too much attention but that will change in a few months when the twins are bigger and i have more time for him. With a Downs child the time consuming attention needed stays for almost all of their life.
Same thing with if one twin was downs and one not.
sounds selfish but actually i view it as selfless, I wouldn't keep a downs child for my own wants if it was going to have a negative effect on my son.
There is an article in this months L&L with a mother who gave birth to twins and one has downs. She's coping but she certainly hasn't taken it lightly and the 'normal' child will likely have to attend therapy to ensure he doesn't get negative feelings towards the attention his sister receives. the mother is also talking about taking therapy sometime too.
it definitely can be done but i feel you need to be very pro active in your actions for it to work well for every family member. It's very time consuming and can become very costly too. I take my hat off to anyone who does it but i know I just wouldn't be able to cope.
OH BTW CONGRATS ON FINDING OUT THE SEXES, 2 GIRLS!!!!! I'm jealous, i have 3 boys
