Hapi- soooooo sorry I'm only seeing your post now
o.k i would definately say you don't need to worry about the weight difference now, that is so minimal, the Dr will just keep an eye on it.
to give you some idea of what the outcome might be if things get worse here was what happened with my 2
from day1 there was always 1 weeks growth difference, i actually conceived my boys 6 days apart, which is pretty rare but it does happen believe it or not. So already i was prepared for a small size difference.
@ 24w Dr told me that i shouldn't worry too much about the size difference getting bigger because it can easily fluctuate with fraternal twins because they are 2 completely different babies in the same way as no 2 siblings are usually born the same weight from the same parents (which makes sense i suppose)
roughly 30w Dr scanned baba1 @ 1.8kg and baba 2 @ just 1.1kg that was clearly a huge difference but he wasn't prepared to take them out at such a small size because they were both healthy hearts beating beautifully and my health was in perfect condition, no swelling, regular BP etc, he monitored from there very carefully. To say he wasn't concerned would be a lie but he was very good at reassuring me he would let no harm come to my boys.
32w showed a bit more growth from baba2 and he closed the gap and was measuring 31w and baba2 32w so all seemed to be back on track but then @ my 34w appointment baba1 had grown to 34. 6 days and baba 2 had basically not grown since the previous appointment.
I had a UTI from 33w which may well have been a sign that my body was taking strain trying to support the 2.
My gynae appointment was on 34w4d and he was seriously concerned now, he sent me directly to the hospital to be on a twin CTG overnight and he would re asses in the morning from the results.
the next morning he struggled for a while to find baba2's heart beat and decided he did not want to risk it any further and he did the C-section that evening.
baba2 was born @ 2.2kg, never went to NICU he came straight to me in the ward. baba1 weighed in @ 1.6kg and spent 17 days in NICU but only for weight, never saw ! day on a ventilator thanks to the steroid shots they gave me from when i was admitted on Monday night.
today both boys are 5 month and as healthy as can be, have never seen the paed for anything other than 2 & 6w check ups
so although it is extremely worrying it doesn't necessarily have to have a bad outcome or mean something is wrong with the physical development of the baby. When i told friends about the huge size difference @ 30w some suggested i go and have a full fetal assessment done to check for abnormalities etc but my Dr told me they are both healthy just one is getting better nutrition than the other so i never went for the assessment and he was right, there was nothing wrong physically or mentally with my boys, one was just growing at a slower rate.
if get worried and want to chat and I'm not noticing your post you're more than welcome to email me vickie@babybear.co.za anytime.
