Makky - i was also with dr wynand truter with both my pregnancies. Also lost my first son (24 weeks), got a mcdonald suture at 13/14 weeks, and carried my second until 36 weeks :)

Hi ladies,

I have Incompetent Cervix too, my OBGYN DR Wynand Truter Durbanville Mediclinic caught it too late lost my baby girl at 16wks, he said next time I fall pregnant he will put the McDonald stitch at around 13wks.

I am kind of terrified because DH and I are currently TTC. and if I do pregnant again it is going to be once challenging journey because I don't think I want to announce the pregnancy until I am 100% sure the baby will make it maybe around 30wks(not sure if I can hide it that long  ) the last time I announced too early and had to explain to everyone what happened to the baby :( in addition to dealing with the loss. the whole process left me depressed.

But positive stories from Huggles and others do make me hopeful that I can carry and give birth to a healthy baby soon ;)

A friend of mine also found out very late that she had a shortened cervix. She was put on complete very strict bedrest for the remainder of her pregnancy. She wasn't even allowed to walk to the kitchen for food. Literally lying down all day. I think she was only allowed to shower every second day. Even had to shave her legs lying down. She gave birth at 32 weeks.

I would honestly try to spend as much time lying down, preferably with your hips slightly raised (or put a brick under the end of the bed) as you possibly can. To prevent clots your hubby can massage your legs daily to help with the blood flow.

i was diagnosed with short cervix on my 25th week (exact day) and i was told it was too late to put stitches on...my OB had me admitted to the hospital for 3 days. it's my first pregnancy and it's been a joy and excitement and suddenly, made me depressed a little... so yeah, no stitches...just advised to go on bedrest, but not totally since OB also doesnt want me to get leg clots so he advised me to walk a bit after a few hours of lying down in a day. i also still walk to the ktichen and make food but no lifting of anything heavy or putting effort on stuff/chores, no intercourse, avoid depression and stresses...

i'm just having this suppository Cyclogest to help and we pray it will be the miracle worker. I'm just 25 weeks and 5 days and i'll see the OB again on the 24th of this month... they also injected me with celestone for baby's lungs.

have u had any experiences like mine? like, diagnosed on the 25th week, and what were the remedies/solutions? were you able to give birth A-Ok or it really led to preterm birth?

i must admit i am scared. i don't have any contractions or bleeding and baby's been moviing like an acrobat daily...but yeah, i guess, for a first time mom, it's scary. and we do not want to lose our baby.

I lost my first son at 24 weeks which is also what led to my diagnosis.

Basically I went for the NT scan. They did a careful measurement of my cervix and sent that to my gynae. He then booked me in for a few days later (might have been 1 week later, i can't remember exactly). The morning of the procedure he scanned me again quickly to see exactly how long etc my cervix was. Then I went into theater. It was scary as all hell because placing the cerclage holds it's own risks and can result in miscarriage (although the risk of miscarriage is significantly lower the earlier you have the stitch put in, which is why they place it at 14 weeks when possible). But you have to weigh your odds. Your story sounds very similar to mine and I knew that without the cerclage there was a super high risk of my losing my second son too. With the cerclage the risk was much much much lower. I was so scared about possibly miscarrying though I actually cried whilst waiting to be taken in to theater.

Got in there and the gynae and anathetist were lovely and tried to keep me calm by making jokes. I cried when I woke too, but I tend to do that after sedation. Think it's all the build up fears coming to the surface.
There was no pain after the procedure at all though. But I did feel like I had a major wee on board. The gynae sounded surprised as he said he emptied my bladder in theater but said I could go if I wanted to. Turned out the feeling was actually mild contractions I think. Or like a cramp in my uterus. He said it was normal to have cramping after the op. It subsided after about an hour or two I think. I stayed overnight in the hospital and the nurses came around to check my pad periodically to make sure there was no major bleeding (there is a bit of bleeding after but not much).

Went home the next day and was on bed rest for two weeks. Was also on antibiotics just in case to prevent infection. They made me feel super nauseous so he said I could stop them when I went back for a check up after a week. He'd done a swab in theater and it came back negative for infection which was why he allwed me to stop taking them.

Aside from the awful nausea caused by the meds i actually felt fine. I was so glad once discharge because i hadn't miscarried and the op had gone well. WEnt back for follow up scan i think 1 weeks later (might have been 10 days) and he showed me the stitch on the scan. He was very happy with the placement.

I had an appointment booked to have the stitch removed at 37 weeks, but my waters broke at 36w2d and I went into labour immediatly. Went straight to hospital where he removed the stitch. Actually he couldn't quite remove it because my cervix was too high at the time but he managed to cut the knot and made sure it wouldn't tear me. Then he took the rest out about 2 weeks later. (I had vaginal birth)

The cerclage made all the difference. I was still careful and didn't carry anything even remotely heavy. Took things easy, didn't go on majorly long walks or anything like that. But otherwise life carried on as normal, and today i have a happy 21 month old boy who is the light of my life.
