Newborn and baby advice

@Claudia Angel sucks me dry too when I am at home thats why I stopped expressing when I am at home. I just do it here at work. Dont give up tho or you can sleep later and wait for your boobies to get full before you express.

Lol Desiree, dont blame youfor wanting to try with the cereal, its something new and exciting:) Finished the book already and its great. It really makes you think about peoples reasons for doing things. Its definitely the way that I am going to go. The only thing is that I am going to have to rethink food for my hubby and I, because although we dont eat a lot of instant foods, I do use a lot of stocks etc which all contain too much salt for babies. I guess in the end it will only be healthier for us too (funny is they say dont eat too much wholewheat bread because its too hard for babies to break down and makes them full without giving any nutirtion, so we'll hae to swop to white bread:))

Its been so warm in Durbs, last night was 20 degrees when I got up to feed James and today is 28. I'm just desperate for rain. My garden looks like a sandpit...

@ Angels mom I wish I could get so much when I express. I just fel like James is sucking me dry....have pletny for him, but he feeds both sides everyfeed and I can never get enough when I express as a result!

@Bronz I started expressing 3 weeks before I went back to work! The first few bottles were quite small but once I got the hang of it I was able to express lots. Express when baby is feeding so that you can get a let down. In the beginning its difficult to express one boob and feed baby but u get the hang of it.I had about 15 bags of 100mls but then the 1st day I went back baby used a few but now have about 8 or 9 left in the freezer as my stash. I currently express anything between 400-450mls a day. I use Ziploc bags but dont re heat using th bags I just thaw in the fridge and transfer to bottles. Good luck

I was thinking about buying breast milk bags and reusing them? Wash and sterilize them? They seem quite hardy.

Adri, when using the ice cube try, how do you cover the milk?

Desiree: I feel for you, having to keep an eye on the ladies so early. Happy you had a great braai. Will you be combining spoon feeding and BLW? I was thinking of doing it that way to feed a bit of cereals and yogurts and such and let him do the rest. So at least if we out I can control the mess factor.

@Claudia - I'm still waiting for my book to arrive, it should have been here last week, but Im still waiting... grr..... I gave Connor a taste of cereal on the weekend though, naughty, I know but I wanted to see how he did with it...and he didn't do too badly, not too much of the tongue-thrusting movment, so alot of the food stayed it..lol...it was just a little bit of experimenting! The weather in JHB hasn't been too bad actually, its much colder than Durbs...but its not freezing at the mo - you should be ok!!

Hey ladies...

My Baby Led Weaning Book arrived today and I'm already 1/2 way through it. I have definitely decided that this approach makes far more sense developmetally to introducing solid foods than anything else. I especially like the first chapters about how traditional methods of feeding have been established (with no scientific evidence to back them up).

Jhb mommies how cold is it up there at the moment? I'm going up on Sat for a friends 30th and am scared that James is going to freeze:)

@Nelria - wow, Xen seems to be sleeping well @ 6 weeks, you are a very lucky mommy - but you always seem very chilled, so he gets it from you - well done mommy!!

@Bronz - I also prefer the Baby expo to the Indaba, the expo is FABULOUS...love it, the Indaba is boooooring and not worth it at all! Im glad it looks like Graeme is taking to the bottle...good thinking on the gripe water on the teet - clever thinking lady!!

We had such a great weekend - we went to a Braai at my neices house...and Connor was a little angel - impressed everyone, and was a happy, smiling baba the whole day = all the girls were in love with him! I still make sure I'm home to do his bath & bed time routine @ home, dont want to take him out at night yet...its too cold & I dont want him to get sick! Then on Sunday, Hubby, Connor & me went for breakfast and a little shopping and just spent the afternoon together, I was soooo sad that the weekend was over!! Also - I've started giving Connor a little taste of rice cereal. Our Paed & the Clinic sisters recommended that we start introducing it to him - so he's been having that after his 9:00am bottle. He wasn't too interested at first, but it seems like he is starting to like it now...I'm just going very slowly with it as I only really wanted to start him at 6 months, so for now we are really just "experimenting" and letting him taste here & there and so far ... so good! I realise that all babies are individuals..so I'm just going at Connors pace.
