I'm leaning toward the creche purely because the job I just got booked on is only for 9 weeks and I really cant be late and I dont want to employ someone just to have to potentially let them go..
I am a little irritated that I have to be R500 admin? fee and buy toilet paper? ream of white paper etc.. and what not (a whole big list of crap really) in addition to the admin fee.

Hasie - Goodness where do you live that daycare costs that much! We are paying just over 1k a month for a full day which includes cooked lunch then you just send a few snacks that your child likes - NO sweets! and then for baba's you send all the bottles for the day or any mashed food if needed.
So yeah for what we pay there is no way you can find a nanny for that or less!

Ps. I just have to add, we play with friends a lot after work or on weekends. So she is exposed to germs all the time. We also have two dogs, which speaks for itself. :-)

I have tried to limit N being with sick children or adults, because I do not like her being sick. If the nanny is sick, I take off work and send her home. This has only happened about twice.

Hasie, my mother was also a teacher..and somehow that works out so well.. I also had a Nanny, and my mother was there in the afternoons, taking us to all sorts of activities..
Must say the creche in our area, is also expensive!

Memo, I am very pro-nanny BUT I hunted for a nanny since I fell pregnant. I found one, did not like her, found another, did not like her and third was a charm! Agnes started with us when I was about five months pregnant. We got to know and trust each other. Then we were together when I was on maternity leave for four months. I HATED leaving my child but I knew she could not be in better hands.

N loves her nanny, she is SO stimulated. She counts till 12, knows all her colours, have a fabulous sense of humour, is a pleasant child and just fun to be with. I have had the luxury of popping in throughout the day, my work is very flexible.

I realize she is getting older now and needs friends. I am taking her to a playschool next year for half day.

It's a difficult decision to make and I think the person you have in mind plays a big role. I was very blessed with my nanny. Yes, she comes in late, which makes ME late, she sometimes frustrated me but she is an angel and wonderful with N.

We also have the December Issue..its hectic!

The Creche my LG goes to has seperate play areas even for the babies. So they have plenty of time outside (if weather permits)
Usually the extra activities are only from 2 - 3 years and up, and you have to pay extra for that.

I still take her for swimming lessons on Friday's and Horse Riding on a Tuesday..Not to sure what the going rate is for a Nanny at the moment?

We have been lucky so far with A's health in the creche..no issues.! Suppose its better that they get used to the bugs out there and build up their systems, when they go to school one day they going to be exposed anyway.
