I agree, we are really blessed to get in there, so I promise you have nothing to worry about going there!
I know of friends who have been through multiply IVF's and IUI's privately and have a paid a fortune so I really am so grateful for this opportunity!

Thanks I will keep you posted!!
Will unfortunately be injecting myself
Hubby can't handle needles, he'll probably hurl if he had to inject me

Hi Annie,

Not to worry  . I was previously on Fertomid 50mg but it did not work. I did not make any more follicles on that. We then switch over to Laradex, which also did not work. I was lucky I did not get any side effects. No hot flashes or mood swings nothing.

I was also on Discovery about 2 years ago and they also declined some of my blood test. And with the medical aid that we are on now it is basically the same. Some test they cover and some not.

Yes the lady at GSH phoned me and asks me to go and get 3 different kind of test done and my hubby must also have the HIV test. I need to bring the results with me to my appointment to speed things up.

Wow if I look back on what we have paid on previous appointments than I feel very blessed to be able to get an appointment and have this opportunity.

Best of luck for the next couple of days. Hopefully you won’t get any side effects. Are you doing the injection yourself?

Good luck, fingers x.

Hi Hope
For some reason I always only see your messages days later, so, sorry for late reply :)
I just started my cycle yesterday, so I start my meds tomorrow, day 3.
I will be on Fertomid, but only 25mg, for 5 days, then injection on day 7 and 9 on cycle, then go in for bloods and ultra sound on day 10 of cycle.
So worried about the meds side affects as I don't take very well to medication, very sensitive to any meds!! How did your meds affect you?

Regarding costing... You get sent an invoice in the post for your appointment, so you don't need to pay when you go. Every consultation is only R270, then you pay for your meds before you can take them. Meds come to about R1700 for the IUI.
You don't pay for the actual procedure. But then will get charged the R270 every time you go in for consultation.
Such a blessing!! So it is a lot cheaper than private, but all the bits add up. Like I had to go for other bloods with Path Care, which Discovery never covered and that amounted to R700. (they declined it saying it was fer fertility). IVF - you're looking at anything between R6k - R15k.
Depending on what you earn. Hoping we don't have to go this route, but we are trusting God for a positive outcome with IUI!!

Oh another thing... to prevent any delays, not sure if you were told, but you and hubby have to submit an HIV test which is no older than 6months, so if you don't have, just go have it done at Diskem and take it with you. You want to be prepared with everything on hand so there is no delays, as it takes about a month to get your next appointment.

Please keep me posted, will be thinking of you!

Hi Annie

I feel a lot better know that I know somebody that was already there. I did not know that it is so much of a hassle to get an ivf but we will find out what they say at our first appointment. I am actually looking forward to this now. Like you say, once you in it’s all downhill from there.

How are you doing with all your meds, what did they put you on? Any side effects? If you don’t mind me asking how much was your first appointment and how much do they ask for an IUI.

Good luck, holding tumbs

Hi Hope

Hehehe, I also counted down to our appointment! We got it quite soon actually, we just had to wait a few weeks.
The doctors are really lovely! Nothing to be afraid of! You will be in good hands. To go ahead with IVF is a longer process than IUI as you will need to submit all your banking statements / payslips, to see how much you have to pay and if you qualify to go there.
Luckily with the IUI, they just go ahead with it, so it's a lot quicker process.

I was also worried for our first appointment, but after our appointment, we both felt at peace, doctor was so thorough and loving.
She discussed the whole process with us, went through both our history and did an internal.
Hubby came with me, if possible, let hubby go with you as it's a really long appointment and so much to process, info overload!
You will want him there with you.
Our follow up appointment was a month later, and they literally gave me my meds then and we're starting this week, so once you get in, it's really quick and painless.
We really feel blessed to have been able to get in there!

Shame, it looks like you have been through quite a journey!
TTC since 2009?! That must be so hard! At least you guys are still young, so hang in there, it will happen.

Problem with us, all fine my side, hubby had a varicocele, went for an op last year, but no improvement, his count and motility is good, but quality - morphology only 2%.

No worries about all the questions!! Please shout if there is anything else you would like to know.

You really are in good hands there, so no need to be worried!!

Wow this is so great, please excuse my English, my afrikaans are much better. I am so glad to speak to somebody that is also at GSH.

We got an appointment at GSH for the 9th of May. It is in 37days. Ha ha yes I am counting the days like a child. I am some days very positive about the appointment but then other days I am very down. We have been for 2 IUI at a private fs but both times it got cancelled. We would like to have an IVF but I don’t know it they will do it. I have a feeling that they will start with everything from the beginning again. See the problem is with me, my amh results are 1.28. I am only making one follicle and sometimes it doesn’t mature and then there are my tubes. My left is open but my right one is closed. So far each month my follicle is on my right side. If you don’t mind what is the problem with you guys?

I have so many questions, how was your first appointment, did you need to wait long? What did they do at your first appointment? How are the doctors? I am so nervous ha ha and I don’t know why. Tell me did you hubby went with you the first time for your appointment? They told me that mine don’t need to come along. Thanks so much for letting me know.

And I am so sorry for all the questions ha ha. Good luck this week, I am holding my tumbs for you guys.
