People instictively want to reach out and touch your baby - but my last two kids were winter babies so I just realised that every time someone touches them they are getting exposed to what ever germs they last sneezed/coughed on to thier hands.
I would either put my hand out as they reached and say "please don't" - most people would react like I slapped them through thier face and kicked them in the groin!!
But I would explain that I spent one week in the paed section with baby number 2 when she was 14 days old, as she picked up a cold that she just could not fight off and got so ill it was very disturbing.
I learnt my lesson there.
When anyone reaches for my child I flash back to the week of not sleeping, sitting in that ridiculous lazy boy chair which does not recline enough, at Milnerton Medi-Clinic whilst they keep the flourescent lights on 24/7 days and you are so sleep deprived and worried about your tiny baby who has a tube coming out of thier forehead as it is the only place they could get an intravenous line.
So that is how I logic it out, and that is why I say "no please don't touch" or stop thier hand mid-air.
We are way too polite and let total strangers do things that we do not want them to do, because we are too scared of being rude of making them uncomfortable.
A week in the paed unit cured me of that problem.
