Hi ladies, apologies for my 2 cents as I'm actually trying to conceive number 2. With DS tho I used glodina towel like the good ol days with cute waterproofs. He potty trained early and cuz u change even just for a wee, no rash even during teething. Teething put him in hospital twice BTW so it was rough but not a spot on the bum. More work but so worth it :-)

with my 1st i did the liners and it really works great. with my 2nd i rarely use liners and it works just as great. with my 2nd i use fleece liners more than the disposable liners. but then F also is very consistent with his poos, makes his poo round 10 and some days again at 4-5. think the liners just got another thing to do and i just didn't feel like it...hehehe
but i do put fleece liners in my favourite nappies to not have any chance of stains

Hi StellaK,

Thank you for your reply.

I think I will start with the Al1 nappies. Do you insert a flushable bamboo liner into the nappy?

Hi Berry,

welcome to the wonderful world of cloth diapering.

1. fancypants is very nice nappies. for an 18 month old you will need to go with the bamboo nappies (personally i do think fancy pants are overpriced as they are just a pocket nappy)
2. regarding types of nappies - pockets are easy and dry quickly, but you need to stuff the insert into the pocket after washing and some ladies do not like that. i dont mind and enjoy my pockets alot. All in ones (AI1) are the easiest and most like a disposable but they also takes the longest to dry because everything is sewn in one. then you get fitteds and hybrid fitteds. the fitted nappies are not waterproof and will need a cover. but they are the most absorbat nappies and mostly used as night nappies. hybrid fitteds are somewhere in between waterproof and not waterproof. if you have a heavy wetter, then you will need a cover with hybrids as well. if just a light - medium wetter you can use them without a cover. hybrids are usually handmade and you buy them from a work-at-home-mom (WHAM) then you get a all in 2 nappy which is a cover with trifold inserts and if babay just has a wet nappie you can just replace the insert. then there is also flats (the old way of cloth) and they will need covers. this is the cheapest option
3. with fabric. some pockets come with microbibre (usually the cheap nappies) this is not very absorbant and really only suitable for tiny babies and light wetters. then you get bamboo and hemp. with your 18 month old, stay away from microfire and get bamboo or hemp.
4. regarding what typ is best, i think it would be easiest to try pockets and AI1's to start out
5. when getting to brands, there are a large variety of nappies available so again i thing its best to buy a few different brands to try out
6. so for starting out here is a few brands that i think are worth it to start out with - Biddykins (for cheap nappies to get going, but get the ones with bamboo/hemp inserts). bam+boo baby has a nice AI1 that i think is nice value for money. baby behinds are Australia nappies that is very nice and if you have a heavy wetter this will be the best. look for the mama bear website/facebook. my personnal favourite is TomFips (only on facebook) but her nappies are very popular and sometimes difficult to get one. Eco nappy sollutions is fabulousand this WHAM also has a variety of other handmade clothing items. then doodlebums has alot of different brands and also some imported brands which are all nice. little Sams also have a nice variety but mostly imported nappies so more expensive nappies
7. jion the facebook group South african cloth nappy users and there is a list of retailers that sells nappies. also on that group is albums in the photos so you can see photos of different brands on babies and get a better idea of how it looks. they also have a website with tonns of information on how to get started with cloth

you are more than welcome to ask any question here. will try my best to answer them all.

i have been cloth dipering for 3 years now and had 2 babies in cloth for the last year. cloth diapering is just such a nice hobby and i love it - more obsessed by it hehehe :silly:

Hi Ladies,

My daughter is 18 months old now and I am thinking of switching to cloth diapers during the day. Will still use Pampers premium every night and when we are out and about.

I like the look of the fancy pants nappies, but not sure which one to get as there are different options available.

I am thinking of getting 3 nappies just to start with and see how it goes from there. What should I order apart from the 3 nappies and which is best - pocket, original, basic, hemp or all in one nappies? This is all very confusing to me.
Also do I still need to add a cover over these nappies for water proofing?

Any advise would be appreciated.
