Yip, we've always got to be watching our backs! Unbelievable!
Today so far, Jude's had... bananna for breakie and egg yolk (perfect finger food!) and peach for lunch! Tonight I'm making him, Rye bread with brocolli. I might have to rub a bit of tomatoe puree on the bread... (vit c)
When did you guys feel safe to start tomatoe.. I suppose your bolognaise defs has tomatoe in Claudia? No weirdness? Everyone I know always makes out to be evil..

Hi Marijke, Ive been missing having you around:)

Bronz, I was happier starting with single foods, but I guess its up to you. I now give james 2 meals a day - breakfast and lunch. By dinner he tends to be a bit miserable and there is so much else going on that its really difficult to sort food out. Hopefully when he gets a bit older it will be easier.

During the week for breakfast James gets cerelac. I jut help to preload iton the spoon. I eat pronutro, so he thinks he is getting what mommy is having, but at least I know its fortified with iron so it puts my mind at ease with regards to getting enough. Weekends he has a selection of whatever hubby and I have - usually fruit etc..
I have taken to making a little extra dinner each night and then having it at lunch with James. That way I can avoid the night time foods that I would prefer him not to eat right now (like potato bake whic is loaded with salt) Usually its a selection of veg with a bit of meat and a starch. So for eg yesterday James had cauliflour and chicken pieces. (David and I had chicken, cauliflour and potato back for dinner the night before). Today is spagetti bolognaise etc..
On weekends he eats with us.
I give him yoghurt etc as dessert on occasion (I use full cream plain with mushed up fruit to sweeten it) He loves it frozen as an icelolly:)

He started out eating well, but he seems to not be interested in food at the moment. I think he might be teething because hes not sleeping as well either...

@memo, the WHO guidlines say that food is COMPLEMENTARY for the first year i.e. an adjunct to milk feeds! I dont know why so many health care profs feel that food is soo important if they are getting plenty of healthy milk? No wonder SA is like 4th in the world in terms of obesity levels!!!! I'm glad you stood up to her. When I get asked about food I just say that he is getting 2 meals a day - cereal in the morning and a selection of fruit/veg and meat late afternoon and that I prefer to make my own. They can make their own assumptions with regards to how I prepare it:)
Another thing I'm struggling to come to terms with is why in Europe, and the americas they recommend starting whole milk in the first year, yet in SA there is a huge market for milk made especially for toddlers? I'm convinced this is a ploy by food corporations:)

Yay. I can now join this thread. Graeme and sit and is trying to eat every thing and anything he can lay his hands on. I finally feel he is ready for solids.

I have done a few things so far, but will start from tomorrow with one meal a day. Which meal is best to start with? I was thinking lunch, just after a feed and his nap.

I know about giving baby your meals, but should one start with individual flavours first?

Wrt to yogurt do you feed baby? I am keen to have me do some feeding. And what cereals do you feed baby if any? I dont like the idea of rice cereals, but oats or that type?

Looks like I may end up with quite a few questions.  to

I do have the book and I am slowly working my way through it,But I must say a BIG thanks to Desiree - Connor's mommy. She sent me her copy once she was done with it. :)

Memo, you'd know better than me which foods contains which vits etc, just wanted to say that you are doing a great job and to keep up the good work! BLW is really the cutest thing and glad that you informed the clinic sister that there is more to feeding a baby than purees! You go girl!

In a nutshell girly, I'd tell her to read the book :) Sorry hey but the book for me was very informative.

I only went to the pead twice (6 weeks and 3.5 months) and never again. And didn't go to the clinic unless for injections and never spoke about food, so I wouldn't know if they know about it but people who have never heard about it are very closed minded (as you might have noticed from a couple of fights on this thread ;) )

But in a nutshell if you're friend would be interested and you are coming to the moomie get together I can lend you my book and then she or you can just post it back to me when you are done, or we can meet up again, which ever way would work.

Hi girls

I am not part of this group. LO is still too young to think about it!

I was telling a friend with a 7month old about it though as she struggles to feed her baby pureed foods, and she seems quite interested.

Hope someone can help me. If I were to tell her in a nutshell what it entailed so that she can start BLW what would you say?
Are there any websites or any other support areas? And do clinic sisters / paeds etc know about it?

Thanks!

So I finally went to the clinic to have my lb weighed, mainly because I was a little bored and I thought it might be nice to see how much he's grown. She gave me a couple of printed pages on what he should be eating, she also said that food is more important than milk which I didn't agree with and she said that I should be spoon feeding meals and then after he can have a finger food. I must have given her a little skeef look... because to me that sounds like she is suggesting that he doesnt actually eat the food he feeds himself! Anyway, I explained that not only does he eat ALL of it (she asked all of it?, yip that day for lunch he had half a cooked pear) but he looks super posh when he eats cos he takes a bite and then chews it with his mouth closed (alot of the time anyway) and then finishes his bite before chomping off the next piece!
My point is that before I left she asked a little more about blw, and then said o well you are doing well, he is a little taller than the rest of his age group and a little heavier! She did recommend I up his meals to 3 times a day.
Today was breakie: peach, lunch: avo, snack: finger of rye bread (also a hit and I think it would be nice to spread left over veg on:)
Yesterday: breakie: sweet potato, lunch: cooked pear, dinner: avo.
Also she mentioned that he needs lots of protien and to make sure of his iron intake, (iron + vit C)
Any suggestions? He often has brocoli trees, but I need to make sure he also gets the vit C. And I was thinking of incorporating some tofu squares and cottage cheese. Is the creamed cottage cheese from woolies appropriate?
Ok... done
thanks :)
