I've also ordered my book from Kalahari.net and Im eagerly waiting for it to arrive - can't wait!! Have spoken to my hubby about the concept, but he's a bit skeptical still ... So, I'll let him read the book with me that way it wont seem as it its some daft idea I've cooked up all on my own, ha ha

My beautiful baby boy, Connor Troy, was born on 20 March 2010 and my 2nd gorgeous boy, Cullen Reece, was born on 2 September 2011 - I am very blessed indeed

Zodwa, your little Ruru is one advanced baby! Keep us updated on how its going.

Claudia, it is such a common sense approach. After reading the book I was wondering why I've never heard of a lot of other mothers doing it!

Let us know what you think when you read the book girls (those of you who are waiting for it to arrive)

Reading this thread has gotten me quite excited. I'm demand feeding and he whole concept makes sooo much sense:) After all they put toys in their mouth to explore their world, so why not make the toys nutritous! James is only three months next week wednesday, but I've ordered the book from kalahari to inform myself better:)

Gave him Potatoes for supper, asked DH to feed him coz I was still cooking.
Nxt thing I know DH comes downstairs screamiln my name saying the baby is choking.
When they finally got to me, Ruru was busy chewing & swallowing whatever was in his mouth.
So I told him not to panic, he'll gag every now & then, it helps him learn how to manipulate food. So DH was nervous, didnt want to "feed" Ruru anymore so he waited till I was done cooking.
By the time I was done Ruru wasnt interested anymore. He nibbled a bit & played with his food instead. i let him play with it thogh :)

Zodwa, you are correct when you say that. I don't think Ruru would have been able to feed himself were he not ready. When giving advice on starting early I tend to err on the side of caution, but if you feel comfortable enough then follow you gut and go for it!

When I started with B I gave a variety, usually 3 different things, 2 pieces of each. (like cheese, cucumber and a bit of chicken for example) I did however save the eggs till she was 6 months and still haven't introduced nuts or peanuts. I waited with milk and milk products also till 6 months (like the cheese and yoghurt etc) So I mostly started with fruit and vegs and chicken and went full out after that.

But start with the basics 2 or 3 different things a day and just keep your eye on him. If he does react to something be sure you know what you gave him and if he handles anything you "throw" (sorry, bad pun there) at him then go all out.

Because I cant find the book, Iv been googling BLW
One thing i read said that the baby's gut develops along with his ability to feed himself.
Yes Ruru is turning 5 months in 8 days time & theoretically speaking is young for BLW since everything says 6 months.
Would I b right if I said he is ready, his gut is ready, beacause he is capable of feeding himself.
Iv been trying to read the thread from the beginning to get more info & I see u just gave B a variety of foods from the get go & didnt introduce them one by one.
I have asthma, not caused by food though. In ur opinion do u think its safe to give Ruru a variety from the get go because there are no real food allergies in the family?

Juno, good luck and keep trying! I am sure your little one will be ready soon than you think :) How old is your little one?

Zodwa, wow, your little one is fast hey. I started with fruit and veggies. Only around 5.5 months did I really include her in full family meals. I just gave her the veggies first. But yes you are right, no added sugar or salt. If you eat other spices you can add it, a breastfed baby has experienced spices through your breastmilk already. I wouldn't say keep it bland if that is not how you normally eat it but do cut back on the salt since it isn't good on their tummies (not even for an adult!)

I always made dinner by cooking vegs and potatoes in just plain water, take out LO's food and then add salt etc to the rest.
