Sorry TCS, I'm probably too late. By now you'll know that the numbing injection before the epidural is the worst of it. When it spreads it burns a bit. Hope that helps, Astubchen. Once the numbing effect has taken, the actual spinal needle only feels like someone poking you hard in the back, but not sore. One of the side effects you might get is shaking while you're on the table. Your lower body, from just under your boobs, is paralysed (I could actually move my big toes, but that's also normal), but my upper body shook like I was having fits. Remember, your body is undergoing major surgery and will go into shock. Don't worry, you'll be able to hold your baby even with the shaking. The shaking mostly subsided in recovery.
They insert the catheter after the epidural has started to take, so once again, you only feel pressure, no pain. I was nervous about them taking out the catheter (about day 2), but it really didn't hurt, it was kind of like a tickle with very slight burning just as it comes out of your urethra. Weeing for the first time after hurt just a little bit for me, but really not badly.
We had our first really sleepless night last night. I knew I wasn't supposed to eat chocolate...but not that I couldn't drink Nestlé hot chocolate. Poor little baby's tummy hurt like mad! In the end I gave him a little Panado paediatric syrup and he fell right asleep...for 6 hours! Needless to say, my boobs were seriously heavy when he woke up!
Please find attached a pic of by far THE most beautiful and wonderful sight I have ever seen and the one thing in my life I know I did well. You really don't know true love until you hold your own child in your arms! You girls have a lot to look forward to!!
Any more questions are welcome!
