I agree - MA's are a rip off! My friend who's also pregnant now told me about a medical insurance plan she is on... They are a family of 4 and it covers any emergency, hospitalisation and dread disease for the whole family for only R850 per month!!!

That is a damn bargain!!!

They also cover her entire pregnancy and I think that is absolutely fantastic...

Know the feeling of work... I seem to be pushing all the documents on my desk to the "to do" pile for tomorrow!... And to top it all off I was contacted an hour ago by DSTV to inform me that I was one of the lucky winners for the Disney on Ice experience tomorrow night! So my level of concentration is ZERO! Just imagining my daughter's face when she sits there Every time that advert has come up on TV she's been going crazy, begging us to PLEEEEEEEEASE go...

So this will be her little "pregnancy" treat

Medical aids are a rip-off doesnt matter what way you look at it. Our medical went up with R650 in Jan, which i think is ABSURD!!! And with baby coming on we will be paying over 5k a month, just for medical aid?? MADNESS I TELL YOU

My daughters school had a granny and granpa morning, and they did a little concert for them. it was sooo cute!! The school really made such a effort, they served snacks afterwards and every grandparent got a frame with a picture of grandchild in. really was very sweet.

Gosh LouiseMarie, that really sucks. Medical aid costs sooo much! The only options we have are Malcor or Sizwe. But I can't complain, I've found Malcor to be generally quite good.

It didn't take long at all to register at Dischem. They made a copy of my ID, I filled in demographic details (name, date of birth, address, contact numbers and email address) and then selected which benefits I wanted to opt in on. Then for baby club it just asked for quick details and the due date – no proof of pregnancy Then I just asked them if I had to spend only on baby stuff and they said R300 on anything using your card and it doesn't need to be all at once.

As far as choice goes, I went with a basic one which was R249. It doesn't require probe covers and works for use in the ear and on forehead. Doesn't have extra features like fever indicator (which I don't think is really vital) and only has keeps the last reading in memory instead of 30 odd.

There were newer ones which don't actually require physical contact, but I said to DH that I'd rather go with one where the technology has been around for a while. The main thing is that I can measure temperature quickly and painlessly, I'm not worried about fancy features

What I said to the lady yesterday from Discovery is the fact, that so many employees get BULLIED into going with Discovery, as that is the medical aid most employers opt with - best thing is: My employer doesn't even pay 1c of my contribution... the whole amount comes off my basic salary. But the company gets the tax benefit of being registered with Discovery. Absolutely NO benefit to me... And I was VERY happy being on Bestmed... But the company refused to pay for Bestmed.

Going to Dischem this weekend Can't wait!!! They say you get your bag in your 30th week of pregnancy. and that they will phone you... So maybe just diarise the date?

Did it take you long to fill out the form for registering? Did you have to take anything along to "proof" your pregnancy etc?

I'm curious - which electric thermometer did you opt for and how much did it work out? I saw the Clicks branded one, as well as the Safety1st one - how does one choose!!!
