Hi everyone!
I am online for a short while, but not really feeling too good. I came home yesterday and it is the hardest thing to leave your little baba in NICU. I know he is well cared for, but it doesnt seem fair right now. I am battling to deal with everything that has happened since thursday.
Basically, my waters just broke at about 3am on thursday. I had been very tired on wednesday and lay down for most of the day, my little girl just played - unpacked the cupboards and drawers while Mommy just dosed with one eye open, shame! Wed night I told DH that the baba is up to something, and I was hoping he was moving out of the breech position into the head down position. Got up at 2am for gaviscon and wee, and fell asleep and at about 3am the waters just came. My waters never broke with my little girl, so it was very strange. There was no blood, mucous or anything, so I still didnt think anything, but the water just kept coming and coming, in gushes and then in trickles. I went back to sleep for an hour and eventually woke DH at 5h30. I was very brave and thought nothing was wrong. Of course, the movement got less and less, but I thought Baba had moved and was just resting.
DH said it was better to get everything checked out and we got to the hospital at about 7 or 8am. My Dr is on leave, so the stand in was there in 5 mins. The amniotic test showed it was defnitely amniotic fluid leaking and my urine showed protein and that labour had started. I was 33 weeks pregnant. I was not aware that I was already having contractions. The gynae still said I could try for naturl, but once we saw that the baba was still breech, he said no ways. But I really respected him for saying that if the position had been right, I could have allowed natural labour to happen.
The c-sec was planned for 18h00 but then he changed it to 16h30 - I was so nervous and emotional. Cortizone was given for the lungs and everything was explained. I had nothing to eat and eventually they brought me some breakfast that was about 4 hours old - argh! DH had to go sort things out and my Mom took Missy, I was so alone and although supposed to be resting, my mind was working overtime. I had packed a quick few things at 6am, but defnitely wasnt ready to have a baba by 6pm! Thank goodness I bought some things the week before!
Anyway, by 2pm I was really ratty and poor DH didnt know which way to jump! I was hysterical at times and just working myself up. The Dr said there was almost zero amniotic fluid left, and battled with the sonars. But the heart machine is like the best thing ever - I kept asking them to put it on so I could just hear the little baba's heartbeat! There was very little movement - so scary!
Long story short, I had the epidural and the c-section at 16h30. THe gynae said it was the most difficult delivery he has done this whole year! Baba had moved transverse and as he cut, little baba "threw" his arm out - so there was nothing for gynae to get him out with (so to speak). He doesnt like to use instruments - I again I respect him so much! All baba has, is one bruise under his knee - from the delivery that is (not to mention the injections, blood drawings, tests etc now). It seemed ages before he cried, and DH agrees it was a long time, I know I counted to about 40, and I wasnt even really sure of when he had been taken out. Oh yes, even the anethetist was called to push down from my chest - every Dr was helping. Every nurse and sister has been talking about the delivery! Even today the one NICU came to me and said she heard it was difficult. At the time, I didnt know and the gynae was talking about it while the paed was seeing to him and all I heard was something about arm, and there and then I accepted that he might have something wrong but it was ok. After they got him breathing they allowed him on my chest for about a minute. Thank goodness. Its the longest and lonliest time when baba and DH leave and they continue with you. And then I was taken to recovery and then the ward. Totally numb, physicaly and emotionally.
I am just so grateful for the excellent care both him and I got. Oh yes, the paed didnt realise we ddnt know the sex, so he was busy with him and DH was still trying to see.... quite funny looking back.
Anyway, besides some help to take his first breath, he has not needed anything for breathing, although he had something for the first night, but that came off in the morning. His infection levels are very good, so the antibiotics were stopped today. He has gone from been fed 6ml yesterday to 12 ml's this morning. Although, it seems he has jaundice, so we are waiting for the tests today and he'll proably be under the lights from today. I dont know how long for. I take each day as it comes and dont ask questions that I know the Drs cant answer. In my mind, I'm hoping he is home for his Daddy's birthday on 3 Jan, but if he can make it for Christmas, it will be the biggest Xmas gift ever. I cried for the first time this morning when I woke up, I just wanted my baby with me. It was lovely coming home yesterday, but it doesnt feel right leaving him.
Unfortunately, I have a thrombosious (spelling?) in my left leg, so I was sent for all kinds of sonars, doppelaars yesterday. Absolutely no walking or picking anything up for a month at least! I cant even walk to the NICU, I have to be wheeled! I feel awful. THe c-sec healing is doing ok, but I am extremely nauseous and have had a terrible tummy (Vix, I think I read that you had the same?).
I am not going to moan too much right now, just taking every day as it comes. Thank you for all the smses and messages. Chris, sorry, I didnt have your number with me! I really never thought it was time!!!
I am amazed at how a 33 week old baby can be such a strong fighter! He is amazing!
I am managing to express and its going very well. So far, no formulae for Nathan yet. The are all very pro-BF at the hospital - again I only have respect for them. I really believe everything has fallen into place.
Oh, and his name is Nathan-John. Nathan being my maiden surname, and John being DH's second name and the feminine of Jane (from Sarah-Jane, his big sister). Missy saw him on Saturday, and she was so good! My mom has been amazing and has been here since Thursday and DH has been wonderful too! He was and still is so worried about us!
Compared to my Missy, this pregnancy has been totally the opposite from start to finish, but we come through so much this week.
Ladies, please take it easy, and hope everyone has an amazing week! Sorry for no personals, maybe more during the week. I am just very numb right now. Thank you for all the support!!!
Maryke and Vix, been thinking of you and the little guys lots!
Chris, how are you?
Lots of love! Nats xxx
