Pale i thought yesterday was Thursday and was very disappointed when i got home and realised it was wednesday.

The school thing is quiet tough, i work at a private university and kids here drive mercs and bmws, its alot of pressure to the other things that cannot afford it. there those that are fine and study but there those that do not care to study, just spend their parent's money, buy drugs and do all sorts of things.

I am really scared for my son and dnt see him as a strong person. i pray we find a good school for him and that the company he will keep will be fine. Private and public i think it depends on the child, the location of the school and other factors.

i am not thinking about schools right now, will start next yr coz moving also affects the decision of choosing a school. i hate that a child will have to travel alone with the school transport and sometimes public transport to get to school, its not safe.

eyo its tough to be a mother.

Hi ladies

I agree that there are some fantastic public schools in JHB, i went to a great one as well. But the problem these days is that there is very little, if not close to no space for kids that dont live in the area. For example...if you want to send your child to Rivonia, you have to live in the immediate area to ensure you get space.

I want my kids to go to Parkview Primary, then Parktown (based on the current standards that is- who knows what the situation will be in a couple of years)..but we definately cannot afford to buy a house in the Parkview/Parktown area.....

Its a tough one!

Mosaneo: My thoughts are with you, i am sure your hubby will find something it will take some time to. My parents went through the same thing when their business was liquidated and it took some time to find a job and get back on their feet. Will pray that something comes through for your husband.

I have started phoning creches etc, if we were able to afford for me to be a stay at home mom, we would have definately done that at least for the first year of the childs life. I am not looking forward to the first day that i have to leave my lg at the creche

Hubby and I had a dilemma of public and private school, we have a friend who is a teacher at a public school. She had mentioned that there are public schools that offer education at the same level as private schools and that you can tell just by going to the public school, checking out their facilities and how they run etc...I suppose it boils down to a gut feel and reviews from other people are helpful.

We have already decided which primary she is going to, Rivonia Primary School. We have heard good things about it and we have a friend whose daughter goes there and she is happy.

When it comes to high school, we will cross that bridge when we get there in deciding whether to go private or public.

On the up side one more day to the weekend :woohoo:

Hope you all enjoy the rest of your day... :)

Hi Ladies, thanks for the thoughts and insights!

Palesa and Momtoc, I agree wholeheartedly. We may be able to pay the school fees if we plan carefully, but I'm afraid of the social circles our LG will have to move in. We certainly can not afford overseas holidays, brand clothing (shoes, handbags), very expensive extramural activities etc, and I'm worried that because of that, a child will feel like an outcast. Or worse, feel that she has something to be ashamed about.

Ms_S, its great to hear another perspective, and I agree, much depends on a child's own personality. What is grade R, btw? Will your son be going to the same school you did? That is so nice, since you must be comfortable with the place. I wish we could do that, but I didnt grow up in Jhb :(

Well hopefully we will not have to worry about this for a while yet!
